PDL is making it so the big clubs (big supermarkets) dont have to compete with the small clubs (ma-pas)....
Fine print -- a lot of this is about league play... Not tournament or Cup play.
If the small clubs don't like the PDL setup and league play, do what you can to reduce the importance of the statewide travel leagues -- shorten them, set up some regional conferences to reduce travel, have a short spring league as warmup for open tournament season, extend tournaments into fall to fill the league void, set up a ratings based system for tournament play to help seeding, perhaps work to provide some sort of short all star regional winter league with regional teams that would go on to Cup play to do their thing to show that they are equal or superior to the PDLs year round one club approach. Whatever floats your boat.
There are plenty of options available, especially if the WSYSA is promoted to open up to a wider marketplace of ideas so areas like Ea Wa, N Sound and S Sound/Va can come up with solutions that fit their ruralish environment. Then get out there, develop and compete with a better product. If successful, you may even have some PDL clubs rethinking their PDL commitments to massage Crossfire's backside much of the year.
Jumping up and down in a hissy fit whining about the need to return to status quo ain't going anywhere. That ship has sailed leaving MaPas their row boat... It's time for MaPas to go back to the drawing board...
The MaPa reality (which is probably shared by many PDL teams) is most have 3 to 7 top players and a boat load of decent to mediocre utilily/filler players. It's a fine environment to learn good soccer, up to a point. The regional reality is there are probably 12 to 18 top MaPa players in each of N Sound, Ea Wa, S Sound/Vancouver regions, who could compete with Crossfire if given the chance.
These players would also bring back and share their experiences playing higher level ball to their home teams, much as World Cup National Players bring world Cup skills back to their home teams...
Meanwhile, the mediocre/modestly talented players & parents might get a needed rest from year round soccer, freeing their teammates to step it up a notch to practice and play with other top notch, highly motivated and talented players. This is also the model that Little League Baseball successfully uses for it's World Series teams...
Or feel free to paddle around in circles -- good luck getting anywhere...
