*** GRACIE - MOVIE REVIEW ***
« on: June 09, 2007, 07:10:58 PM »

Just saw this movie advertised.  Below is a description of the movie I cut / pasted from Yahoo Movies.  Has anyone seen this yet?  If so, what do ya think?  Sounds good.  I see it got a PG-13 for brief sexual content....wish they wouldn't have added that in there...now I'm not sure I want to take my 11 year.  :?

Trailer:
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809760961/video/2386498/20070413/137/2386498-700-wmv-s.35687630-187944,2386498-1000-wmv-s.35687628-187944,2386498-300-wmv-s.35687579-187944,2386498-100-wmv-s.35687588-187944,2952676-10300-qtv-s.35688007-,2952676-2700-qtv-s.35687990-,2952676-6800-qtv-s.35688002-

Set in 1978, a teenage girl overcomes the loss of her brother and fights the odds to achieve her dream of playing competitive soccer at a time when girls' soccer did not exist. Living in South Orange New Jersey, 15 year old Gracie Bowen is the only girl in a family of three brothers. Their family life revolves almost entirely around soccer: her father and brothers are obsessed with the sport, practicing in the backyard's makeshift field every day from morning 'til night. Tragedy unexpectedly strikes when Gracie's older brother Johnny, star of the high school varsity soccer team and Gracie's only protector, is killed in a car accident. Struggling with grief over her family's loss, Gracie decides to fill the void left on her brother's team by petitioning the school board to allow her to play on the boy's high school varsity soccer team in his place. Her father, a former soccer star himself, tries to prove to Gracie that she is not tough enough or talented enough to play with boys. Her mother, Lindsey Bowen, already an outsider in the sports-obsessed family, is no help either. Undeterred, Gracie finds reserves of strength she never knew existed, and persists in changing everyone's beliefs in what she is capable of, including her own. Gracie not only forces her father to wake up from his grief and see her as the beautiful and strong person that she has always been but she also brings her family together in the face of their tragedy.

GD, there was an interview in week-before last's Parade magazine with the producer (I think) Elizabeth Shue and she plays the mother too.  Based on some of her life experiences.  Interesting.  I've not seen it, so I'm sorry I can't give you a tip on it.  I think my DD (also 11) can handle the content - it may give you a good opportunity to discuss some stuff with her or him.

Sorry squashy....just wanted to make sure the CP's with this particular age bracket of kids saw the thread.  Not sure how many are like me, but I normally only look at the U11 - U14 forum.  ;)

Yeah, I hear ya. ;)   My kid can certainly deal with the tugging of the heart strings this movie seems like it will create and all the rest of it.  I just get a bit concerned when the PG-13's are rated as such for sexual content.

A few of us parents from the U-12 team took the girls after practice on a Saturday.  As an adult I cried and was depressed through most of the movie.

Some of content that I felt was not appropriate involved Gracie rebelling.  She and her friend seduced the bouncer of a bar, got in, smoked drank and ran amuck with college boys.  They also stole her parents car and shopliffted at one point in the movie.

The message I tried to get accross to the girls after the movie is that as society as a whole has come a long way since the 70's.  Girls who are athletes today are respected.   Things have changed a lot in the last thirty years -when girls were considered "off' if they wanted to be competitive in an agressive sport.

I would not recommend this movie to young soccer girls.  I think the message is a little too deep for them to understand (especially now that they are trying to digest "human growth and development" in school).  And for the mom's of these girls, bring you box of tissue.

I have now seen the movie (without DD) and I agree.  I'm glad to have seen it, but not something I'd necessarily rush out to take my DD to see at this age.  The movie is accurate in that girls who have Dad's that reject their daughters or don't show them they are worthy of their praise, respect, and love will normally go seek that out from another male, one which likely is just going to say whatever to .....well...you know.  The movie goes to great lengths to get this point across (too much so in my opinion).  The movie almost makes it seem like the rebellion is an acceptable reaction to what is going on.  Normal yes, acceptable, no.  Overall I thought is was a good movie, but there's many things they could have done to make it more realistic.  For example, 1) girl was at tryouts without shin guards (wearing ankle socks), 2) a lack in footage on ball control skills to demonstrate the "greatness" of the key people, 3) camera jumped around in the game shots so fast you couldn't even tell what was going on, 4) needed a girl who could kick the ball a bit harder than the one they had in the movie to make it more realistic, etc.  A good movie (especially since there's not that many about girls in soccer), but not necessarily something I'd recommend for a young kid to watch.

Still interested in hearing all review from others who see it to see how they feel.  ;)

Overall I thought it was a good movie except the detailed scenes in her rebellion stage. But I liked how the relationship with her Father was covered.

My DD and DS have the same sort of close bond and relationship portrayed for this girl and her brother in the movie before he died...I hope it doesn't change when they move into the teenage years.  ;)   They truly miss each other when apart for too long...best buds for sure, even if they do argue at times (just lets me know they're normal... ).

Thanks GD for starting this topic! 8)
I appreciate the information and opinions expressed by all.
It helped me make the decision to not have my DD see the movie.

I'm not one for "sheltering" children but then again "there's a place and a time" and because of this post ... I get to choose ... thanks to you all!

Glad it was helpful.  I agree with you, I'm not one to shield my kids from "life" either.  I also don't usually get that bothered by the fact a movie might have some blood and guts in it (for example, the Jaws and Rocky series of movies my kids loved), but I do try and stay away from the movies with sex or many crude references to such - especially if it involves teenagers in the act.  Like you said, I just choose to have a different time and place to cover that topic with my kids of such young age.

However, it is a pretty good movie, so I suggest you go see it with your better half.  Also consider buying the DVD when it comes out so your DD can watch it a few years down the road.  ;)
