A few of us parents from the U-12 team took the girls after practice on a Saturday. As an adult I cried and was depressed through most of the movie.
Some of content that I felt was not appropriate involved Gracie rebelling. She and her friend seduced the bouncer of a bar, got in, smoked drank and ran amuck with college boys. They also stole her parents car and shopliffted at one point in the movie.
The message I tried to get accross to the girls after the movie is that as society as a whole has come a long way since the 70's. Girls who are athletes today are respected. Things have changed a lot in the last thirty years -when girls were considered "off' if they wanted to be competitive in an agressive sport.
I would not recommend this movie to young soccer girls. I think the message is a little too deep for them to understand (especially now that they are trying to digest "human growth and development" in school). And for the mom's of these girls, bring you box of tissue.
I have now seen the movie (without DD) and I agree. I'm glad to have seen it, but not something I'd necessarily rush out to take my DD to see at this age. The movie is accurate in that girls who have Dad's that reject their daughters or don't show them they are worthy of their praise, respect, and love will normally go seek that out from another male, one which likely is just going to say whatever to .....well...you know. The movie goes to great lengths to get this point across (too much so in my opinion). The movie almost makes it seem like the rebellion is an acceptable reaction to what is going on. Normal yes, acceptable, no. Overall I thought is was a good movie, but there's many things they could have done to make it more realistic. For example, 1) girl was at tryouts without shin guards (wearing ankle socks), 2) a lack in footage on ball control skills to demonstrate the "greatness" of the key people, 3) camera jumped around in the game shots so fast you couldn't even tell what was going on, 4) needed a girl who could kick the ball a bit harder than the one they had in the movie to make it more realistic, etc. A good movie (especially since there's not that many about girls in soccer), but not necessarily something I'd recommend for a young kid to watch.
Still interested in hearing all review from others who see it to see how they feel.
