Soupy, I think you are close as if I remember it had something to do with unemployment.  I always wondered why a reggae band was based out of England.  Red Red Wine.....

Story behind their name is before they had name for their band they'd be playin at various IRA safe pubs in Ireland and they kept hearing "You Suck!" from the crowd. One day the very vocal Edge cry back, "Yeah, well You Too!" The whole band though whoa, there it is. Our name. Bono being the scholar of the group is credited with the misspelling that lead to U2

True story...

I'm wit ya, don't like Beatles, or Led Zeppelin or the Stones. Some of the British bands were OK, but not many. Although Deep Purple, now there's a band. The Proclaimers, a couple Scottish lads, they could sing a bit,,,,,,,

Lotsa started in the 70s bands in there, a probably incomplete list:
ELO
Jackson Browne (I agree, one of best live albums ever)
Tom Petty
ZZ Top
Wings
Genesis
Walsh
Peaches and Herb
The Knack
The Clash
someone else said Cheap Trick as 70s, probably right.
someone said .38 special was 70s, I don't agree - but I haven't looked them up on the web.  Didn't they follow the breakup/deaths of Lynyrd Skynyrd?

A very disparate list here.
