Can water being put into the gas tank be fatal to an engine?
If it can be fatal, what are the signs I need to look for?

Don't run it brat, even if if does run.  Drain the tank ASAP, fill it with 100% gas and run it for a few miles.  Not fatal, but purge  the corrosion potential  fast.

If I remember my High Schoo Auto Shop anyways.

too late!
Ran great to Aberdeen, sat for 2 days, then back to Nisqually, where it finally gave up, couging and sputtering its last breath!   LOL
I was told that there was either a cracked head or blown head gasket, both of which I know are not good! Oil looked like a grey sludge.

Oil like grey sludge is definitely a sign of water inside the engine.  Usually that means a cracked head or gasket, but since you said you introduced the water through the gas that may not be the case.  I would still change the oil and the fuel and try to run it.  Then check the oil again.  That should tell the story.

It was great until yesterday.  Jim and the girls went camping ( I stayed home thankfully) and they called to say that the Bratebago was down. They got it off the road and are now waiting to have it towed home.

water doesn't burn obviously, so it starts building up inside the cylinder walls. Since it doesn't compress either the engine 'hydraulics' in race engine terms. Meaning it either blows the gaskets out, bends a valve or bends a connecting rod. Hopefully Brats Bago engine just popped a head gasket.

$70-$80 a year for AAA, don't leave home without it. Some credit card companies (the one you have to pay off every month) now have free road side service if you're a card holder.

BTW--you never did say how somebody driving the Brattebaggo pulled up to the water fountain vs. the gas pump???  I know this is painful, but I know the answer might be a bit amusing. ;)

no, that's what did it. Water is heavier than gas, so it sinks right to the bottom of the tank. Right where the fuel pump is. If your bago is fuel injected the high pressure fuel pump did it's job and filled up all 8 cylinders with cool, clear, non-compressable, non-flammable H2O. Up to that point the valves were valving, the sparkplugs were sparking and the pistons were,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,  whoops

honestly, this is a VERY common problem. It happens alot more than you'd think. The little doors all look the same for water, gas, etc. I know people who have filled up their water tanks, got in and drove down the road only to run out of gas in 10 miles. And wow doesn't that water taste good after that ?
