Wenger blasts Blatter's Plan
« on: October 05, 2007, 06:55:51 PM »

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has warned Sepp Blatter's plans to impose limits on foreign players would "kill" the English Premier League
FIFA president Blatter wants to see a maximum of five overseas men in any side, but the European Union states such quotas would breach laws on employment and free movement of labour.
The leader of the sport's world governing body, however, believes that stance should be challenged "to protect the national identity of the football clubs"
.

French coach Wenger has often been criticised for a lack of home-grown talent in his first-choice team - with not one British-born player in the squad for Arsenal's last Premier League game at West Ham.

England Under-21 winger Theo Walcott has had to mostly make do with warming the bench when he has been involved - making just five appearances this season.

What are people's thoughts? Wenger feels he can field a better side choosing from around the world instead of just from Great Britain. Seems obvious and if the $$ is there, then the players will come. Thus far Arsenal and Chelsea are the most notorious in the EPL.Probably because Wenger is French and Mourinho Portugese. Two countries that have stylistic differences than English soccer.

Sir Alex is a Brit and he has amassed  most of the best Brits. Why? Because they play the style he likes. He is just now seeing the value of a different style after watching CRonaldo develop. So Tevez, Nani and Anderson have joined the ranks.

I think Blatter's ideas are foolish and smack of xenophobia. Let the teams choose who they want. The owner and coach know what style they like and they should not be forced to play it with players they may not want!!

And the MLS should have a reverse quota: only 5 Americans should be allowed per side to enhance the game :P
