Friday Morning Blah Blah Question!
« on: November 16, 2007, 09:15:12 AM »

Thought maybe some great answers to these questions would help some of our "newer" parents overcome the fear/excitment of travelin' out of town for the first time ;)

#1

My Sons/Daughters team is going out of State for the first time!!

and I feel Like a "pie eyed newbie" (stole that line)! LOL

What things should we do to make our trip more enjoyable!?
any good "out of town" stories or tips you can share? ;)

Yup. If you're a CP for a kid on a Vancouver team, that first drive over the mighty Columbia to play out of state in Portland can be a nightmare!

The first thing you do is take one of those "pre-approved" credit card offers and set that card up as your soccer travel card and hope it has a big limit because you are going to need it.

I like to support the local small business guy.  Try to find a little mom and pop motel with about the same number of rooms as your team (or teams) may need and book the entire place.   :D

Our trip to Ca this year we supported some local business guy.  Think his name was Conrad Hilton or something like that.
Seriously G-Man I like the idea but how do you know you are getting a good place?  Is there a way to research this?  I also think it would be fun for us on here to compare notes for these trips as to what works and what to avoid.  The first to avoid is a mistake our team made.  We tried to get the whole team to eat together on Balboa Island.  Well Balboa Island is tiny and all the businesses are also small.  Not one was big enough to get the whole team into.

1.A -
Bring DVDs and a portable player (my laptop plays DVDs, so I use that).
Bring homework (if during the schoolyear)
Don't allow the DKs (or the spouse    ) to run free-willy all over the hotel. Remember, the coach is usually responsible (even though they usually don't know it) for the group.  Do you want them knowing your kid was the one who made the $$ go up?
Unless you can get reservations at a restaurant, do not go as an entire group between games.
Carpool if you can.

2. Wherever there are RedNecks - you will find Cowbells.  Ugh they are so embarrassing.
I came to my nephews game once and my parents were came too. My mom had a CowBell. I was SO embarrassed.  I stood way far away.  She was not out of control with it though. Just a few 'jiggles' when a goal was scored.
Those that use them more than that are just obnoxious. Do you think Mr/Mrs Jeykll turn into Mr. cowHYDE once they touch the bell?

I know (and admire) a certain coach that requires the team to wear club gear at all times during out of town tournies.  This not only shows club pride, but reminds the kids that they (and thier actions) represent the club, even off the field.

Boy I hope some of you more experienced CP can share some words of wisdom.  The farthest we've ever traveled is Starfire.  Which was pretty exciting, they have awesome pizza!

And if they use cowbells in Cali, can someone hook me up?  I want to blend in with the locals & they don't sell them at Starfire, I already looked.

Thanks for all your support and wisdom, I'm all choked up with emotion :)

Friday Morning Blah Blah Question!

Well when going to Surf Cup it is definately a must to bring a workable credit card or plenty of cash.  This is the most expensive tourney we ever went to---just the concession stand and memorabilia would put you into the hole big time, but go the Crab Shack right around the corner in Del Mar and you are in a world of hurt.   Our team always has a team mom or two who makes a trip to the local Costco for water, bagels, turkey, cheese and or fruit and we have a room specifically for snacks between games.  Kids usually always wear their team gear to again help them be reminded who they are representing.  As a team we always eat breakfast together and parents are on their own.  Safety wise the kids always partner up whenever in the hotel no matter where they go and the coach or manager must be notified if they go out with their parents.  Have plenty of parents in the water if they go to the beach.   8)

Before traveling to Cali or anywhere for that matter please look down.  If your pants are all jacked up and they cost less that 50 bucks than you most likely have mom or dad jeans on.  If they are jacked up or it looks like part of your body is eating your clothing promptly go to your local mall, no not walmart, freddies, pennys sears, etc.  and spend some real duckets on jeans ($80-$400) that sit below your waist and cover your old shoes. While your at it take off that fanny pack and that tavern or fishing jacket..... As for shorts or bathing suits if you can't pull it off than don't...You know who you are....

If you find a place where they sell cowbells, buy them all.  Take the bells home and throw them all in the garbage.....

Please remember you are representing Washington here....Try your best to be quiet on the sidelines and for god sakes don't yell boot it or offsides on every play....Pretend like you know the game even though you have never kicked a ball......Most likely your coach already screams enough for you all.....Remember to have fun, it is all about "development" anyway....Oh and don't do the tunnell...

You mention these two specifically, but how do you feel about "take 'em out" or "slide tackle"  are those ok?

I love the tunnel.  I did a GU18 game two weeks ago where most of the girls on one of the teams had been together since kindergarten.  Before the start of the game they did a corny song/cheer while jumping up and down as a group.  After the game they did a tunnel for both teams.

It brought a tear to my eyes and made my day to see these young ladies have fun and truely enjoy themselves.  I like Rec!!!

Cowbells??? You literally have to go to a Feed Store.  I got ours in downtown Woodinville - you don't have to go that far and the bigger they are the louder they are.

So I don't embarass my kid, I give it to someone else's younger sibling to use.  they love it.

Our team is heading to Nomads for Thanksgiving.

Although we have a non-stop flight, all players will have in their carry on (uniform, shoes, guards).  I have been on flights in the past when the checked baggage never made it on the plane ;)

Cowbells - always great and very annoying to the other team when you score.  To avoid embarassment to your kid, just give them to an attending younger sibling of a fellow player.  They love to ring them, it's great.  You can find all shapes and sizes at a Feed Store.  Feed stores are around, just check the yellow pages, you don't have to go to the country to find one.

Bull honky--forget about feed stores.   Get on the internet and google cow bells --Switzerland Style and get one of those huge ones.  That way you get a dong instead of a ding.  Plus you get a workout as they weight about 25 lbs. ;)

I like to support the local small business guy.  Try to find a little mom and pop motel with about the same number of rooms as your team (or teams) may need and book the entire place.   :D
