Become a referee.

Upgrade to at least a #7.

Contact the referee assignor at the tournament and ask if they need help covering games (we've all experinece games missing an AR).  Ask for games outside your child's age group and the time your child plays.   Make arrangements for another traveling parent to get you to and from your game (refereeing) to the team's game so you don't miss anything.  Don't look for semi-final or finals games; they save them for the local referees.

Save your receipts for travel, lodging and food.  Come income tax time you can claim the trip when you file.

One of the unknown perks of being a referee.  I make some the money back while on the trip and make more money back come tax time.

Now the entire trip is justified; the team going to the tournament in the first place and me being selfish to travel with the team.  If the team ends up losing (not bringing home a trophy); I end up winning by making some money.

I, totally and completely agree with you huh?!!!  Did I just say that? :?

Everytime I hear those friggin' (not the word I would normally use) cowbells I wait to hear YEEEEHAAAAWWW!!!!!  Then I check to see if they get into their "pickemup truck" after the game.  Good lord, I know we live in WA, but come on people, at least ACT like you have some home training outside of WA....PLEASE!!

Friday Morning Blah Blah Question!
« Reply #42 on: November 16, 2007, 06:33:20 PM »

Ok, I have nothing funny say about cowbell's because I'm stil laughing at Yote's youtube video, and really, how could I beat that?

But if you seriously want some advice about traveling.....have your manager or team mom or whatever you call it put together a packet for your team before you leave, and hand it out at the last practice before you take off.  This should include directions from the freeway or airport to the hotel, from the hotel to each field you'll be playing at, and directions back to the airport.  It should also include an itinerary for your team to follow including curfew times etc.  This should include "free time" and how much pool time the coach allows etc. (I know there's always a lot of debate about that issue) There is nothing more frustrating than getting to a place, not knowing when or where you're supposed to be there etc. Once everyone is there and separated, it is more difficult to round everyone up to disseminate info. The itinerary should also include the uniform kit for each game so that everyone knows what to wear.

Second,  If you try to have a "team dinner" you are screwed.    We tried this at Slammer's twice last summer, and both times was a fiasco for the staff at the restaurants, and the bill was an absolute mess.  I know another team that went ended up accidentally stiffing the restaurant for all the kids meals.  If you want to do this, take the time to plan it ahead as a banquet, and get it all figured out financially before you go.

Buying group food for between games is a must.  Have every parent chip $5 and send one or two to get it.  Too many shoppers make it too hard.

Finally, make sure your manager has all the cards and rosters with them no matter what, at all times, or they could end up having to drive back and forth to the hotel to get it.  I won't bother explaining how I know that.

Well, this was long, but actually some of my best advice.  Just make sure to include drinking time for the parents on your itinerary somewhere.  That is most important.

Bull honky--forget about feed stores.   Get on the internet and google cow bells --Switzerland Style and get one of those huge ones.  That way you get a dong instead of a ding.  Plus you get a workout as they weight about 25 lbs. ;)

Usually you have enough of those English parents on the team with the Austrian Alps cowbells on a long stick!

And for Luverbutt - a Feed store is a place where they sell hay and grain and horsey stuff.  A good feed store here will have a variety of sizes.

FYI - here at the WA Commis semi's and finals for the past two years, they make an announcement before the games starts that "NO artifical noisemakers will be allowed during the game or you will be asked to leave."

How stupid is that?  This is youth soccer!

Note sure about Huh's advice.

It's either satire (poking fun at various things), or lousy advice.

Thought maybe some great answers to these questions would help some of our "newer" parents overcome the fear/excitment of travelin' out of town for the first time ;)

#1

My Sons/Daughters team is going out of State for the first time!!

and I feel Like a "pie eyed newbie" (stole that line)! LOL

What things should we do to make our trip more enjoyable!?
any good "out of town" stories or tips you can share? ;)

#2

Do they use Cowbells in California?

Boy I hope some of you more experienced CP can share some words of wisdom.  The farthest we've ever traveled is Starfire.  Which was pretty exciting, they have awesome pizza!

And if they use cowbells in Cali, can someone hook me up?  I want to blend in with the locals & they don't sell them at Starfire, I already looked.

Thanks for all your support and wisdom, I'm all choked up with emotion :)

Before traveling to Cali or anywhere for that matter please look down.  If your pants are all jacked up and they cost less that 50 bucks than you most likely have mom or dad jeans on.  If they are jacked up or it looks like part of your body is eating your clothing promptly go to your local mall, no not walmart, freddies, pennys sears, etc.  and spend some real duckets on jeans ($80-$400) that sit below your waist and cover your old shoes. While your at it take off that fanny pack and that tavern or fishing jacket..... As for shorts or bathing suits if you can't pull it off than don't...You know who you are....

If you find a place where they sell cowbells, buy them all.  Take the bells home and throw them all in the garbage.....

Please remember you are representing Washington here....Try your best to be quiet on the sidelines and for god sakes don't yell boot it or offsides on every play....Pretend like you know the game even though you have never kicked a ball......Most likely your coach already screams enough for you all.....Remember to have fun, it is all about "development" anyway....Oh and don't do the tunnell...
