U11-U13:Why do you care?
« on: November 20, 2007, 01:17:22 AM »

I don't get why everyone spends so much time talking about how little DD #1 is better than little DD #2. U11-U13 is a joke. It's all luck. None of these kids can kick a ball without using their toe! Anyways, 75% of them are going suck worse than my 92 year old grandma with osteoporosis when puberty kicks in.

Why waste your time debating the teams at this age? Your wasting your time and money paying for your kids to play on expensive teams that will win for one or two years and then throw your little DD out on the street as she cries over her lack of skill.

Gee Short Stuff, not getting any lately? Lighten up!

How many games at this age have you seen?
The kids are STILL learning and hopefully will, even after the ripe ol' age of U-14 where its not the be- all -end -all of training!

I agree about paying so much for soccer, but the debating is fun and free

Hmmm, this one interested me until I read the original post.

What a doofus (or is SS just trying to stir the pot     )

While I agree that we spend too much time wondering who is better and what team is the best and who is better than whom at these ages, it in no way means that there is not some good little players out there.
I watched some games at U11 this last weekend. I saw some pretty good play.  Is the team game as complex as a U15-U18 game? Ah, duh - NO.
But, the technical abilities, were, nonetheless, coming along nicely.
I knew the teams and clubs and know that they are concentrating on technical development (much of anything else is wasted at this age).

So, while I think that putting too much emphasis on winning, being champions, who is the best etc. is far over the top, these age groups, they are fun to watch and (at least those teams where the coach is concentrating on the correct training) they are learning and coming along nicely.

Exactly where should those kids that will eventually be on the top U14 to U19 teams play when they are young?  Maybe the YMCA during summer camp, or maybe in the backyard with their 4 year old brother (okay bad example, cause that's good   ), or maybe play soccer on a video game?  It may be true that many of the kids on these U11-U13 teams won't play another game when they hit13 or 14 for various reasons, but if you as a parent can't enjoy watching and talking about your kid at the younger ages, then there's something wrong my friend.  Some of the best games I've watched (okay, funniest) are at the younger ages.  It's all good, even at the younger ages.  8)

I have a feeling you are just trying to stir up trouble short stuff.  I hope you don't really feel U-11 through U-13 is unimportant.  If you have kids that play soccer they must have been at this age group at one time.  Are you saying you didn't watch or cheer at those games because they didn't matter?  They matter a lot to the kids who are playing in them.  They also matter to the CP's on the sidelines who like to watch their kids play a sport they love.  My daughter is passed these age groups, but every game she has played in since she was 5 years old has been an important one to me because SHE was in it.

I think it is obvious why these parents care about these games.  They care because it is their kid out there playing.  The question should be why do YOU care if parents want to spend their money to have a kid on a select or premier team at a young age?

Not sure who's kids SS watches but neither of my kids was toe-poking a ball at this age - they were taught at an age way younger than U11-13 how to kick a ball.  There are many changes at this age and the progression is different for each kid - some will continue to get better and some get stagnent.  You could put me out watching U4-5 and it would make me happy.  The fact is we all get involved in watching our kids grow and play the game - some get more involved than others but for the most part this is something that we share with our children.  SS - You ask why we care?  Pull your head out of that dark hole below your waist - We care because these are our kids!!!!

Nice try EW but some of us have our own lives.....my oldest is in her last year and youngest only has a couple left and I love to watch my kids play for what they get out of the game, and because of how much they enjoy it.  I don't need to live my sports career through my kids as I don't have one, but I do still enjoy playing 4-5 times a week on one of my own various teams

I only played soccer in P.E. in school and hated it because you had no shin guards and the boys were so mean and aggressive.  It is much more fun to watch!!  Besides my DD is a tough little $%#@.

Kennard you made me laugh!!!
On what SS stated.....I think that there is more in life's lessons that are being taught in soccer then just as you put it "toe kicking."  You should go to one of Dr. Smoll's (from UW) speaches for team sports.  Learning team work, communication, and self confidence will take our children into a functional life...all of those things can be found within good coaching enviroments with team sports.
