I thought Timbers Navy was the "A" team..if so, anyone know why they are not in the Championship Cup? Saw them at the US Cup and they looked scary good!!
The Navy would be considered the B and the Royals the A. Good players on the Navy probably not deep enough. They could have competed but they are in the correct cup ( CH )
I'm not a southender, so I may be wrong, but I've always heard that Timbers actually considers these teams sort of equal and separate (even though Royal is better this year). They don't put all their best talent on the Royal team for example, and the next tier of talent on the Blue team, and then consider them the A and B teams. With that said, the Royal team is better this year so you can call them the club's A-team if you wish, but it's not how they divide up the players at tryout time. Blue was probably better last year, but nobody considered them the A-team. If you're from down south, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's what I've always heard.
They started as equal teams, as one team came in as a group (Navy), and stayed together. The Royal was also formed at U11 with quite a few girls having played together at the rec level. Typically, Timbers form Red and Blue, with the Reds being the "A" team. It did not happen with the '95s last year, as the girls showed up trying out for a specific team.
What has transpired over the past 2 seasons is that the Royal has emerged as the clear "A" due to several factors. Don't be surprised if for 2008, the Royal name is changed to Red, and Navy changed to Blue. The bottom line is that these two teams are no longer considered "separate but equal".
What will be very interesting is what happens to the girls at tryouts that are on the wrong team if, in fact, Royal becomes Red? There are probably three on each that talent-wise are on the worng team.
