HS soccer is SO much more than playing soccer.  It is social, it is pride, it is being a part of your school.
The reason that the media covers HS and not club is just that. It is HS.  There is pride and belonging and community involvement.  Club is far better in terms of skill, ball play and just good soccer (actually IMO, HS soccer pretty much sucks - except for a few teams out there depending on who goes to the school), but you will never have the community, the spirit and the pride which comes with playing for your school:

So be true to your school, now.  Just like you would to your girl or  guy, Be true to your school, now and let your colors fly.

Couldn't agree with you more- the social aspect and community recognition is why most of these girls play HS ball.  Ask the players (that play club) themselves and most of them will tell you that HS sucks in comparison to club - but they play HS for those reasons.

The HS Boys schedule is separate from club season?
« Reply #34 on: February 13, 2008, 12:50:55 AM »

The Boys Club soccer season and Boys High School soccer season for most public schools in WA State is separate!

I thought the biggest reason for separating the 15 to 18 year old Girls Club soccer season from HS season was due to the increase in serious knee injuries for young women in WA? The injuries were more noticeable for the premier club soccer players who were working hard to take it to the college level and beyond?

First of all the schedule change will be sad. I am use to giving lots of time to state cup. Do the tryouts again and then Springbreak time. It seems like it's hard to have family vacations that not associatted with a soccer tournament during the summer and so Springbreak usually means "OUR TIME"

It can go the other way as well. I know alot of premier girls that are going to struggle with highschool soccer since coaches let them miss practice for many different excuses and get out of running almost every week and they still get to start and get tons of playing time. I feel sorry for any future highschool coaches that have to break those bad habits.

I seem to be hearing of more injuries this year then years past.  I would like to see the stats and see if it ends up being true or not.

I have two DS playing soccer, one Select, one rec.  Both love it and can't get enough.  My Select player can't wait for HS soccer...my younger son told me the other day that he wants to focus just on soccer...he's only 7.  I told him in order to be a better soccer player, you have to be a better athlete...play other sports...so he agreed to play baseball again.  I was relieved!!  Now what I told him may not have been reality, but I didn't want him burning out on soccer...he's only 7...now he eats, sleep, lives soccer since the day he was born, but I truly think he needs to do other sports.  I think that kids dong other sports enables them to use other muscles that are important for all around growth.  It is unfair for coaches to put so much pressure on kids at such a young age to make a decision that they should not be making.  For my older DS, he plays soccer FIRST, then dabbles in baseball and football.  Let them enjoy being a kid and enjoy all the experiences youth sports can bring them. :)  :)  :)

I have to completely agree with this... I ahve right now lost 2 starting defenders to a broken back and a torn calf..... I have just got one otherp layer back after foot surgery for compensating on a pulled hamstring and missed out all of HS because of the injuries.... I have more players on the U15 teams injured this year than ever before.... maybe it has to do with maturity or their bodies... I don't know....

Reason for the change in schedule-

1) To alleviate the conflict between the high school and club soccer seasons due to increasing demands to female athletes playing high school and club soccer as their seasons overlapped during the fall.

2) The number of injuries increased for the 15 to 19 age group
due to over-exertion.

3) Overall player count decreased for female athletes especially in the 15 to 19 age group. -

4) Fewer conflicting obligations with high school soccer and other sports

5) Improves focus on training during each season.

I know that we often move from the discussion...but if you read the primary posting it is actually about younger kids trying out for other sports.  For the older kids I would imagine that this would not apply.
