March 15th and 16th - Weekend of Reckoning
« on: February 19, 2008, 08:12:34 PM »

It appears many clubs are choosing to have their tryouts on the subject weekend.  All I have to say is, gee thanks.    I love how people get on here and say coaches encourage kids to tryout for different teams - it's all a load of #$%$!  Clubs make it impossible to do that with all the overlap, and don't tell me it's not on purpose.  Even if they are scheduled at different times throughout this weekend, it's a little tough to give it your all and then a couple hours later do it all over again, then the next day ditto.  The kid may end up looking slow (when they are simply tired), etc.

Do the rest of you find this as disturbing as I do?  What if you make a choice on one club and skip the rest, then your DD doesn't make it or finds out she really doesn't like the team for some reason?  Then your left having to scramble in search of a team that still has a spot left. Incredible.

Yeah the COACHES would like to see that happen but the CLUBS have a different agenda. They want to get the BEST, the pick of the litter, first.
Being a top club you shouldn't be worried about attracting players as they WILL find you, no matter which date you use.

As for us, running from Club A tryouts late morning to Club B early afternoon in the same day is going to take some major heart and fire from DD to show herself.
Kinda hard when you only get a 30-45 minute car ride between the 2

it's a joke......a bad one at that.  can't blame the clubs who threw up their tryout dates early on  heck, probably can't blame the latter clubs posting the same dates.  but I agree that it's no accident.  what's the flippin rush?   give the kids choices for God's sake and quit making it a pain in the rear for everyone.  It could definately backfire if there's some hidden agenda.  Or, I suppose, it could be same ole same ole.  I think the big club would benefit more for the b, c, and dare I say d and e teams if they ensured less overlap.  sure the smaller clubs want the earlies possible to try and get some players that might oherwise go to big club b-f teams or an odd a teamer that might make a big clubs team.   bottom line is, I think, spread it out, don't make the kids commit right away. let them explore.  but that'll never happen.  this seems to be the worst year yet for overlap.  but I'm probably wrong

My DD had a great year.  She loved her coach.  He and the team were a great fit for our family.  But, if you looked just at wins and losses you would not think it was a successful year.  She has no desire to try out for any other teams, which is just fine with me.  But, I am a little nervous that coaching changes could pop up and pull the rug right out from under us!  Then we might regret not exploring the other options.  I'll be glad when try-outs are over.

OK... here is the deal.  We live in a free capitalist society.  If Crossfire tries out as soon as possible, so will EFC, NWN et al.  The others cannot give Crossfire the chance to "pressure" the parents into committing before their try outs.  Likewise, if Crossfire was to voluntarily postpone tryouts for a week or two, do you honestly think EFC, NWN et. al. would?

Bottom line?  Unless the State sets a pecking order, which they never will (nor do I believe they should), things will stay as they are... as they should.

Now... if some one was to suggest every team MUST wait two weeks after try outs to issue invitations, that might work.

I'm sure all the clubs would obey that mandate... just like the no recruiting mandate.

At this point I think the question is, "who hasn't posted try outs"?  Maybe I'm still in U10-U12 mode, but it seems like a club or two a day have been posting within the last week.

I liked to believe that clubs charged money to make the cp's think twice about going to so many try outs or just going to check out the competition; but seriously when a club charges 5 or 10 bucks it has to be about the money.   :?

I say go to the tryouts that are FREE unless they're planning to give you a refund if your dk doesn't make the team they want to be on!!! ;)

This is a particularly tricky year for scheduling tryouts.  The earliest it can be scheduled is 3/15 & 3/16.  Being a smaller club we usually schedule ours for the next weekend after the "big" clubs.  However, this year the following weekend is Easter which we wouldn't schedule on (although I see one club has tryouts scheduled from 10am to 8PM on Easter Sunday!).  Then after Easter the following 3 weekends all conflict with spring break for the 2 school districts our club "straddles" and past experience tells us that turn out is poor during spring break.  But if we wait until after Spring Break it will be way too late.  Plus we do not have the luxery of mid week night tryouts due to other field related factors.  So - you get the picture........not much room to do anything but schedule for the same weekend as everyone else!

Well this poll brings up a good question.  How many teams should I have my DD try out for?  So far I have looked into two teams for her and their schedules do not conflict (although one day she would have to do a tryout in the morning and one in the afternoon). The problem is we don't know when tryouts for her own club are yet and if she has even made up her mind if she wants to tryout for them again.  I'm guessing when we find out their tryout dates there will be conflicts and she will have to make some decisions.  I would really like her to try out for all 3 because I don't want her to be stuck without a team.  She's a good player, but I know the competition is fierce for the spots available on these teams.  I have talked to her a little bit about this, but I don't want to push her too much and stress her out.  I'm pretty sure I know which team would be her first choice, but what if she doesn't make that team - aaaaahhhh!!  It's all so stressful.  I'm just hoping I don't have to be on this website later in the category - Players looking for a team.

I know it will never work, but I like the idea of a two-week moratorium on tryouts so that teams and kids can have kick arounds, etc. prior to actual tryouts.  That way kids and parents can meet coaches and other kids and CPs...and parents can also help evaluate the best fit for their child.  I would think coaches would like this, too!

I voted for 2, although I don't know yet how we will swing it all.

I am waiting to see the schedule for NWN and Evergreen - they have not announced yet.

This topic was briefly discussed a few days ago, here:

There were a few suggestions listed at the link above that are helpful!

we're happy with team, teammates and coaches. Heck our first year coach took a basically talented but dysfunctional team and took us, and his GU-12 team into the semi's. Can't argue with success.

According the poll numbers so far, about half are playing to stick with their team and have no worries about being cut.  On the flip side, does this mean that about half the kids out there are less than thrilled with their current team and looking over the fence?  That's not a very good sign is it?

There is always the fear of the "unknown".  How many disgruntled studs from other teams will crash your try out???  You could easily go from a "b" player with a great chance of making the "a" team to a  player praying to just hang on to your spot on the "b" team.

If a team does real well in state then it is safe to assume more players will be coming to your try out giving you that uneasy feeling.

Real tough one for us.  DD is newest player on team and new coach coming in.  You never know who will get picked.  Last year she made her 93 team but we wanted her to drop to age and she made that team.  Then the team went POOF and her 93 spot got given away when she said she was taking the other spot (same club even).  We went a few weeks without a spot for her to play and were real worried.  Mark M heard her story and helped out so she could play.  I never want to put her in that spot again.
She wants to play for the same team but we will have her tryout in a couple other teams just in case.
I have not even looked to see who is doing kick arounds because she is still on a team playing this year.
