Parents movie rating guide
« on: March 22, 2008, 09:33:47 AM »

If you need a rating guide for movie, I found one: kids-in-mind

I found it interesting. As you know I am the most liberal parent

in the world and I find it amusing that these rating critics actually

count the # of times the F word is said in a movie- would

you let your dk see a movie with 255 F word but not 256 F words

LOL

My dd and I are going to rent and watch  blue velvet, dead ringers,

natural born killers and clockwork orange LOL Clockwork Orange

-all kids need to watch this -way better than scary (dumb)  movie

12 3 4 5 etc  The above movies  were highly recomended  by

kids-in- mind

   :P  :D

But what fun is it if the kids dont get- you would let your kids see

Clockwork Orange??? How about Eraserhead???

I cant imagine

a 11/12 sitting through Clockwork Orange -way too different -

Our kids should have a movie play date - they could watch it

together    :P

I'm sorry, but my DD and her older sister are NOT allowed to watch any movies with more than 137 F words!    It is my responsibility as their Father to ensure that certain standards are met...afterall, they are the future of this country!  It may not make me popular, but the line has to be drawn somewhere!!

I am more liberal with humor than I am with violence. DD has not seen terminator but loved Wedding Crashers, Blades of Glory and Accepted. After years of dh pulling his shirt over his head and calling himself the great cornholio we rented Beavis and Butthead. What great family bonding now DD gets the jokes. I recommend that and any John Hughes 80's film. DD says movies were better back then. I do agree though with Soccerdad 137 F words is enough and the line must be drawn somewhere. I think we hit 137 f words everytime DH does home repair.

I actually liked 8 Mile- 200 in 110 minutes though.
Does anyone else have a DK that listens to certain songs before games? Mine listens to The Name of the Game (Ole), Thuderstruck/shoot to thrill (Ac/dc) and Lose Yourself (eminem) It was almost an issue before tryouts with low charge on the ipod. Eminem drops a few Fs in that song so you gotta have the radio edit.

My point  with all the F bombs is why be so anal about it and count the # -wouldnt anything over 1 or say 10 be enough as a red flag Also any movie with 100+ seems the director -or the characters were boring because they  lack creativity. And saying the F word over and over in a movie makes the word lose it power -the word loses its shock valve LOL  I havent seem 8 mile or Scarface in a long time-- do the characters use the f word in different contexts- different meanings  because imo saying the F word 200 times in a movie in the same context seems boring like hearing dog used 200 times in 2 hours. I mean if dog was changed to hot dog or doggy or female dog or male dog or big dog or little dog -you get my drift- it would be more interesting

And would do these critics just mark  it down if is a bad word or do they relate the words to context such as the word  Lake Titicaca- fyi  it is  really a lake in South America.

I tend to look more at the quality of the movie rather than the amount of foul language, how much skin is shown, the amount of violence or the type of violence involved.    With a 12 year old daughter and 15 & 17 year old sons, it makes a difference.

I simply do not allow (c)RAP to be played in the house or on the car radio.   I am sure that there are some on the kids ipods, but they know that I regard too much of that crap as anti-social and distructive.

Starship Troopers was a really poor movie, but one thing that it did do was effectively show the camaraderie and bonding that can go on in small military units.   The redeeming virtue (besides being a really good book) that made it worth watching despite violence and skin.

SAW I-V, the Hills have eyes, etc etc is something that I refuse to rent for them see.    That type of violence and gore is anathema.
Jack Ass the movies are actually something that I would let my daughter watch but not her older brothers.

Any rational, responsible parent has to be rational and maintain and exercise some control.    IMHO

Apple, you're right, the F bombs do lose their shock value, but QT certainly didn't need words for that

According to the list Departed had 237 F words and won four Oscars. I have not allowed my 11 year old to watch it, but I do think in some films in the correct context it works. Sometimes it is not for shock value but for authenticity. It truly depends on the film- sometimes there is more on the news or tv then in an R rated film. I would rather have my dd hear one f word in a comedy than hear a detailed account of how someone was murdered or see a re-enactment of a violent crime.

Would you allow your 11yr old to watch Internal Affair(s)? -the
Chinese film that Departed is taken from -hence if it is in Chinese, no 237 F words LOL unless you understand the  Chinese dialect that the actors are speaking  then I guess you are in trouble LOL

I would not let my daughter watch the Departed based on the content and subject matter of the film-not because of the language. So no I would obviously not let her watch a Chinese film similar to it. I will also not let her watch certain PG-13 movies.  Not because of the language but the content. The Ring which is PG-13 is way beyond my boundaries for her. I don't think you got my point at all. In my opinion counting f-words is not the issue. In fact there are films without any f-words that I don't let her watch. It is all about content and  subject matter for me.  I don't think evaluating a film purely on the language is very effective. Nor is looking at ratings. Harry Potter is PG-13 and so is the Ring- vastly different films.

I get your point. LOL

I let my dd watch Once, and it was rated R LOL
Content is my # 1 issue as well. Hence she is not allowed to watch  No Country For Old Men but Once is ok.

Old English One,

I fully recognize that kids do things, see things, and listen to things outside of parental supervision that they are not allowed to when under proper supervision.

That is part of growing up, of stretching boundaries, and such.  But the parental disapproval will have an effect if the parents are effective.  I doubt that any (c)rap song has words that my kids have not heard.   But by setting standards, they understand that this type of language is not acceptable among civilized people.  Just as one example.

I can still quote the words to the Sex Pistol's version of God Save the Queen.   But that does not mean that quoting them here is a good thing, does it?

Just making a point from being the parent of an older one EW.  I was a Catholic School girl and was very sheltered.  However, I kept my eyeliner and lipgloss in my pocket and always had a boyfriend    My point is that "yes" of course you should monitor what they are watching and listening too but that they will and do find a way to be exposed to it anyway.
I just watched Gone Baby Gone (by myself) and every other word was F but I couldn't stop watching it...Great movie by the way!

Looking forward to seeing you in August EW ;)

All of these movies (the majority I've never seen) are out of the question for my dd.  The beginning of a classic 1982 movie scared the sh!# out of her when she was little and to this day, she refuses to watch it!!     Guess what it was....

All of these movies (the majority I've never seen) are out of the question for my dd.  The beginning of a classic 1982 movie scared the sh!# out of her when she was little and to this day, she refuses to watch it!!     Guess what it was....

E.T.

remember the director directed Jaws as well.
He is good @ suspense and creating intensity
