A journey from D3 to D1 Champions! The Santos Story!
« on: April 11, 2008, 09:51:01 AM »

Thought this was an inspiring story...used to read about this team a lot over on GS while it was still around.  Seems they have done what many thought not possible, and over the years have worked hard/trained hard and came from a 2nd place D3 team to winning the Championship at D1....Great story, enjoy

1st Place at D1!!!  What a great way to end your Club playing careers    Good luck in state cup!

Congrats to Billy and this group of girls (and even to their crazy parents).  I remember commiserating with Billy at the rest area east of the mountains after some bad luck back at LPT's many years ago.  I know he had a goal and a way to bring these girls back to the top and the main way of doing this was WORK.  He took many girls that got cut from other programs and molded them into a TEAM that he was LOYAL to.  Good for them, now go win state cup and represent our state.

U-18 and U-17 Girls Undefeated in Division 1
Both Teams Finish 7-Week Round Robin Undefeated
Congratulations to our U-18 girls and U-17 girls who finished first in their respective age groups in WSYL Division 1. The U-18 team ended the regular season  undefeated at 4-0-3, while the U-17 team completed the 7-week regular season with a 6-0-1 mark. WPFC site shows that they were undefeated after 7 games.

10 games made the season.
For the U17s, WPFC ended with 1 loss and did finish first.
For the U18s, they ended with 2 losses, and ended up 3rd.

The posting is misleading as they think they finished first after 7 games (it turned out true for the 17s).  But, Santos made the best of the last 3 games and ended up 1st with Spokane 2nd.

Let's not diminish, though the hard work and results that Santos was able to accomplish.  It is indeed a worthwhil achievement.

Santos isn't the only team that's climbed through the ranks like this. A few years back, the Northwest Nationals Volante were WSYDL at U-14, P-3 at U-15, P-2 at U-16, and P-1 at U-17 (or U-18, can't remember which).

What a Great Job by Santos.

And no surprise that this story came from a club that is not one of the "Big Boys".

I remember a Soccer America article about a SoCal boys team winning the national title at U-18, a few years back.  What struck me was that only 3 players were left on the roster from when the team was formed at U-13.

I wonder how many of the original players were left on Santos when they won the P-1 league?   From the tone of the article, it would seem like most.   (I hope).   Does anyone know?

So, right on, Yote. Billy was a great player in his day and he is a great coach -- for all the right reasons!

Santos follows a tradition of great maverick and independent teams that include the famous Parrots on the girls side and Rio on the boys side. These and other maverick teams share a common thread -- they incense the PDL coaches and clubs because they threaten their attempt to creat monopoly revenue streams.

Stories like Santos should be what youth soccer and youth sports should be about --playing because you love the game and coaching because you love the game and because you want to give back rather than cynically steal the hard-earned wages from ignorant and unsuspecting parents and treating players like expendable pawns in a game reflecting your own selfish ego.

Go, Billy!

D - thank Webguy for their website.....he has done a great job over the years.  Have known Billy for years and he has done an incredible job with these girls who have heard many banter from the "haters" but have always held their heads high.  They have known that they only way to prove anything was on the field and this they have done.  They are the "cinderella team" of this age group.  Know a few of the girls on this team very well and they are a good bunch of girls on and off the filed.  GO SANTOS - represent well

Question, how many of the U-14 girls are still with the team at U-18?

From U-14 through U-18, that would be about average, perhaps a bit above for a high level team, it seems.    Only ten or eleven of the orignals fell by the wayside.
