2008 Manchester United Premier Cup
« on: May 25, 2008, 05:18:33 PM »

Some of the best youth soccer teams in the country are competing this weekend at the prestigious  2008 Manchester United Premier Cup US finals in Beaverton.

32 Boys and 32 Girls U15/U14 teams are competing.  If you are a soccer fan and looking for some very high quality youth play (arguably better than will be found at the Far West regionals in June) cosider the drive to Beaverton to see the Semifinals and Finals on Monday, May 26th.

The less than stellar website for the US portion of the international tournament is on the Eurosportsring website.
http://www.esrusa.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=87&Itemid=121
(all game scores are found on fairly frequently updated PDF pages thougout the day, but searching and finding results by team, date, or state are next to impossible.  Note to organizers - high quality international tournaments like this should have correspondingly high quality websites, not the 1998 version of a website.)

Anyway, the MUPC U.S. boys winner will qualify for the MUPC World Finals that will take place July 30-August 6, 2008 at the home of Manchester United in Manchester, England! NIKE will pay for the flights as well as accommodation, meals and transportation for up to 20 people for the winning team.

The MUPC U.S. girls winner will go on to play in the 2008 Gothia Cup in Sweden, July 12-21, 2008 (travel dates)! NIKE will pay for the flights as well as accommodations, meals and transportation for up to 20 people from the winning team. Please notice that the girl’s package for the Gothia Cup will include accommodation at schools. We are aware that USYS Nationals take place from July 22—27, 2008, in Little Rock, Arkansas. Flights for the girl’s winner have been booked out of/into Detroit.

On the girls side, the Crossfire Girls U15 team won their bracket and advanced to the Round of 16.  The Oregon Rush (Bend, OR) was in the same bracket, finished third (behind So Cals FC Barcelona) and did not advance.  The host Lake Oswego, OR girls team finished 4th in their particular bracket and did not advance.

On the boys side, the Crossfire Boys U15 team finished second in their bracket and advanced to the Round of 16.  The host Lake Oswego, OR boys finished fourth in the same bracket and did not advance.

In the Round of 16, Crossfire Girls defeated PDA Charge (NJ) and advance to the Quarterfinals tonight at 5:15 pm.  Opponent not yet known.

In the boys Round of 16, the Crossfire Boys team lost to the Pateadores Soccer Club (So. Cal.) and does not advance.

Day 4 (Semi-Final and Finals) schedule should be updated tomorrow at:

The Crossfire GU15 team (the defending WA State Champs at U14 and U13) won their Quarterfinal match over Slammers FC 2-0 and advances to the semifinals Sunday at 10:50 am vs Eagles S.C. of Camarillo (So. Cal.).

Northern Cal's Mustangs of Danville face the Dallas Texans in the other semi final, also at 10:50 am.

10:50 AM 1 Girls Semi Final 1 MUSTANG vs DALLAS TEXANS
10:50 AM 2 Girls Semi Final 2 EAGLES SC vs CROSSFIRE

Boys semifinals look like some good matches too if you are in the Beaverton area on Monday.

11:45 AM 1 Boys Semi Final 1 VARDAR vs SURF
11:45 AM 2 Boys Semi Final 2 NOMADS vs PATEADORES

Nice job Crossfire girls, looks like they lost in the final in pk's.

That's pretty sweet finishing second.

My spies field side in Beaverton tell me that the Crossfire girls and the Dallas Texans played pretty evenly through regulation and OT.

Crossfire had some chances and one hard shot on goal nearly point blank that the Dallas keeper reacted well to simply deflect up and over the crossbar to keep Crossfire from scoring.  Texans had more corners and one or two hard shots right at Crossfire's GK.

The Dallas keeper was apparently top notch athelete.  Crossfire's PK's were not their best effort.  My source tells me that even with some better kicks from Crossfire, Dallas GK probably would have had a save or two.

Congrats to the Dallas Texans who win a free trip to Sweden and will now represent the U.S. when they play in the Gothia cup (won last year by So Cal's Slammers FC by the way.)

Washington State was well represented by Crossfire GU15 team, and advancing to the finals in the MUPC with 32 of the country's best teams is quite an accomplishment, although the sting of losing a final in PK's will hurt for a while.

Maybe a win at Regionals in Hawaii might be a good way to erase this bittersweet memory of such a high quality tournament experience. ;)

Crossfire boys lost a heartbreaker 1-0 on an own goal in last 30 seconds of the game to Pateadores who ultimately lost to Surf 1-0 in the final game.
