EFC 97 DEVELOPMENTAL TEAM HOLD HANDS WITH HISTORY!!!

...Waiting in the Tunnel to hold hands with history!

Last Saturday evening the EFC girls 97 Developement team (U-10s) had the opportunity to escort the Brazilian National team onto the field at the beginning of their game vs. The Canadian National team. The girls were very excited about the idea of walking on to Qwest field in front of such a large crowd. Security was tight so only one parent was allowed along to be with the girls once inside the stadium. The team arrived at Qwest Field at 5:30 to meet the Sounders representative, Gary, who had organized their duties and be escorted in to the locker room.  Once inside they were greeted by a FC Sounders employee named Amy who helped the teams get organized in the locker room.  About an hour and half before game time the teams went through a rehearsal and walk though in order to avoid any game time confusion and ease any questions about how things would go.  With about an hour to kill before game time, Amy did a great job entertaining the teams (4 or 5 teams involved with the opening ceremony) during their wait. She lead them in activities including soccer trivia games and soccer tricks/challenges. Joining the girls in their escort duty was the Northwest Nationals Boys U-11 Team (not sure which team). The boys would be escorting the Canadian team on to the field while the girls walked out with the Brazilian team. The other two, older teams (I think an HPFC girls and boys but may have been mixed with others and I’m not sure what teams the flag handlers were from) were in charge of the ball handling during the game and Flag portion of the ceremony.

As game time approached some of the girls were becoming nervous and a little anxious. Both of the youth teams were lined up on each side of the Southeast tunnel that leads to the locker rooms. After about 10 minutes the four referees for the match came out and went to the head of the line as they would lead the entire group on to the field. Next was the Canadian National team. The excitement and tension was very high as the Canadians were lined up with the NWN boys that would be escorting them on the field. During this time there was not much interaction between the boys and the players as the players were extremely focused on the game that was about to begin. Finally the Brazilian team entered the tunnel and were lined up with the girls that would be taking them on to the field. The crowd was getting very loud with the teams getting ready to come on the field, and the fans above the tunnel on both sides were looking down on the two teams in the tunnel and yelling with excitement and blowing their plastic horns. Again there really was no time for the girls to interact with the players before the walk on to the field, not to mention that the players were already quiet and totally focused on the game that was moments away from starting.

There was no placement of who escorted whom on to the field, but alongside Spamkid came #9 Luis Fabiano. DD said that Luis came out with the other players in a line and looked down at her, gave a quick smile and a nod of his head, joined hands and walked from the tunnel and on to the field as the crowd of 47 thousand welcomed them. After the national anthems the kids all ran off the field very excited with the promise of cheese pizza when the arrived at their seats. We were treated to a very exciting game that had 5 goals including a nice header goal from Brazil’s Luis Fabiano that DD seemed to take great pleasure in knowing she had just held hands with him and put him on the field.

MESSAGE FROM THE "PREZ"!

Dragon wrote the President of WYS in reference to a post that questioned an article in Play On that mentioned "Malicious Informational Packets Retrieved"...., Here is the original post:

http://washingtonpremiersoccer.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9031

Here is the Presidents response:

Dragon,
I would be happy to shed some light on this question.

On the eve of my election, in an attempt to discredit the election process and the Executive Director of Washington Youth Soccer, now a previous officer of Washington Youth Soccer distributed a 30 page packet of irrelevant and disturbing information that was a violation of his civil rights and our policy against malicious behavior. At the AGM the next day, this was brought to the attention of the Washington Youth Soccer board and the voting members of the State Association, promptly voted to remove him from office, effective immediately.

After my election, it was the decision of the board to retrieve these malicious packets. By this time the members that received them, had returned to their homes and perhaps distributed the information. I led the charge, after consulting with our attorneys, to retrieve these packets. We drafted a legal document that outlined the rights and responsibilities of board members in regards to harboring this information. We orchestrated sending out prepaid return envelopes to all 42 association representatives that requested the return of the packets to myself for verification. Those that did not have packets were asked to sign a legal document that told me what happened to them and where the packets might be located. The secondary reason this action was taken, was to send a message to the community that the Washington Youth Soccer Association does not take lightly any actions that either violate an individuals civil rights or the policy of Washington Youth Soccer regarding malicious behavior and or actions.

The reason that I mentioned this in my statement was due to the amount of time and energy that it took to embark and complete this action. I felt that it was important to let the members know of a snapshot of what has kept me busy for slightly over 1 year now, I picked items that were time consuming and relevant to the membership and this was one of those topics.

Please let me know if this clarifies this question etc. I look forward to future communications with our members over these questions and issues that raise any concerns.

Regards,
Doug Andreassen
President
Washington Youth Soccer

TALES IN BLACK & YELLOW PART 16!!!

The Road to Hawaii/Arkansas #16

Fine Tuning

We’re down to 10 days until the big test. I would say that the suspense is making my hair fall out. Wait, I have no hair. I am getting nervous. The last decisions I have to make are what to pack (non referee attire) for the trip and how to get to the Vancouver BC Airport. The joke is that I pack for two weeks for a one week trip. I just like to be prepared. The real question is should I drive the truck all the way to Vancouver and park at a secure parking facility or should I take a shuttle from either Seattle or Bellingham. Any suggestions would be helpful. I hope to make a decision by Friday.
Nothing happened this past week that has warranted a topic for this week’s entry. Thus I’m focusing on what’s ahead and how I’m going to prepare for the event. In likely hood that I do get a chance to work on my tan, I have been working out a little for some limited time on the beach. The wife (Yellow Card) always teases me because she says I have an addiction for gimmick exercise equipment. I’ve recently purchased “The Push-Up Pro” and “The Ab-Rocket”. I’m proud to say that my once ½ rack stomach has now become a 40oz gut. Maybe some time soon I can get me a 6-pack (pipedream) one day. Don’t worry I won’t embarrass you while at the pool. While also doing some road work (I hate running), I’ll work some games to iron out all of the kinks in my game.
Wednesday night I have a WashingtonInterLiga playoff match. Friday I have an All Nations Match at Starfire (I highly recommend you take your kids to watch some good soccer and passionate fans over the next couple of weekends) between Romania and Turkey. Then I’m off to Bellingham for some LPT action. All of these games will have a lose and your out mentality that will get me ready for the FWR. Next week I’ll try and take it easy, trying to avoid stepping in a hole or getting sick at the wrong time. I’ll finally get to watch the young one (Red Card Waiting to Happen) play in person on the 11th and 12th. His last few games have been out of town. It’s hard being a CP and not watching your DS play. If I’m lucky I’ll get to work one of the younger academy games just prior to his. Then I get to take a ride in an airplane (I hate flying).
I do have this internal debate with myself that you might be able to help with. Since I’ll be gone and away from my editor, should I send daily reports of my experience in Hawaii or should I take notes and give the information in future Pulse articles #17 and #18?

Helping your kid succeed

What effort do we make to help our kids succeed at the level they chose to play and balance out the still being a kid?

My DK has many friends that play multiple sports at high levels and they never have time for KID FUN stuff. No weekends hanging out, no sleepovers, cause if it is not soccer it is Basketball, swimming or something else.

While I think it is good to keep the kids busy and focused, doesn't allow for time to get in trouble.. but when is enough enough.. When do you just say STOP as a parent, and let the kids relax?

What happens when they get older and find themselves with downtime, and don't know what to do... Do they end up getting in
more trouble, because no one taught them to relax and have fun?

For our family grades come first and I limit the sports to 1 or 2 per season... it can't affect the grades... I also want them to have the opportunity to hang out with friends sometimes... Just relax..

As far as helping them succeed at their sports, do you take the time to practice with them. Do you help them chose a healthy diet? Do you encourage them to play hard and have fun.... or do you criticize what they do, yell at them after games, allow them free reign on the food choices??

What is the balance and as parents are we trying to acheive that balance for our kids?

"Help!  Is there a Doctor in the house?"

Hey everyone, no questions this week but here is a great article from PLAY in the NewYorkTimes on Sunday.

The article by Gretchen Reynolds called SWALLOW THIS states the "Best way to recover from exercise is through yoiur stomach".
With the Summer Tournament season starting, this is a good time to review the negative effects of exercise and how to and not to combat them!!
Salient points:
 1) Muscles over the course of an hour or so of serious exercise use up most of their stored energy.

2) Elevated Insulin levels  occur AFTER exercise. Insulin promotes fuel (glycogen) uptake into muscle. This Insulin window is for ONLY 30-45 minutes post-exercise

3) CONTRARY TO POPULAR BELIEF, carb loading is NOT the most efficient way to stock muscles with fuel because it PRECEDES Insulin level upregulation!

4) The post-workout meal is THE MOST IMPORTANT means by which muscle rejuvenation occurs AS LONG AS IT OCCURS in this window. After that the muscles become Insulin resistant and food uptake has less an effect!! So eating a pepperoni pizza 3 hours after your game is not gonna make you CRonaldo for tomorrow's game!

5)At least 1gram of Carbs per kg body weight should be eaten IMMEDIATELY after a game.Protein ingestion is also needed. The current ratio is 2-3grams of Carbs per 1gram of Protein.
Stuart Lee always made us hand out bagels and applejuice after games for EFC! He was smarter than I thought!!

6) New Recovery Drinks are available and offer anywhere from 4-1 to 2.5-1  Carb to Protein ratios
Human Performance Labs (hplproducts.com) has a new Recovery Drink called PURE SPORT RECOVERY DRINK which has a 2.5-1 ratio. The cost is about 60 for 24 single serving btls. https://store.puresport.us/

7) If thats too costly, then drink a lowcal Chocolate milk or smoothie. It will satisfy your muscles needs AND your inner child!!

8) One final word on the use of Ibuprofen (Advil,Motrin) to decrease swelling post exercise...FORGET ABOUT IT...the drug does NOT reduce muscle soreness or inflammation better than rest alone!!

9) And for all those who prefer ICE baths postexercise, FORGET ABOUT IT...a recent study showed that people experienced MORE pain after ICE BATHS than those who simply rested!
HOWEVER Ice is ALWAYS good for sore joints

10) So maybe Yogi Berra was ahead of his time for promoting Yoohoo Chocolate milk drinks...or maybe not as the ratio is about 15-1 Carbs to Protein!
