Oh, and if wonder why I posted the pix of the roach for the cover, read a couple of blogs (from an Hawaiian travel site) about rental cars in Hawaii:
Sassmo Says:

Cockroaches in your car is pretty much a way of life in Hawaii and isn’t exclusive to convertibles. I think every Hawaii rental I’ve ever been in has had roaches and most of my friends that live there don’t think twice when one runs around the inside of their car.
Miiko Mentz Says:

Yes, I too had this problem, which I shared with Sheila Beal recently for her blog. I certainly learned my lesson to not leave the top down on the convertible rental car when you park and leave the car for a few hours. I had no idea that all those roaches would flock to the car like that. When we all hopped back in the car my daughter says “mommy the floor is moving.” It’s really funny now, but we were all freaked out when it happened. And Hawaii has some BIG roaches!!!
LOL
But don't worry, just hope this frequently seen little critter is not in your hotel bungalo!!! :o

Congratulations to all that were honored at the event!
SPECIAL SHOUT OUT TO SYNERGY 94 LOPEZ!!!
Dragon just wanted to give a special shout out to the gals in Orange from Synergy Lopez. Not only have the won the Silver division of the Skagit tournament so far, but also acheived P2 along with their clubs 94 "A" team!
After only winning about 2 games last year, this is a tremendous feat for the Coach's and Players! Dragon is proud of each and everyone of you little superstars! Keep the Heart & Fire burning!!!
"DRAGON'S" 2nd ANNUAL BRAGGING RIGHTS TOURNAMENT!!!
Well the braggin' rights tournament turned out to be a flop (in some peoples minds)...due to field conditions the fields had to be closed on Sunday and not all the games were played!
But guess what?
We still figured out a winner based on points over the 2 official games played on Saturday, and as you might know, FW Reign Purple won the right to Brag!!!
D will do a little for them ;)
PRINCE GALS RULE THE WORLD!!!
The Reign Purple girls proved this day that NoBody on the planet could beat them!!! Take that losers! They will see you next year where they will "Stomp you all again"! LOL
**note, the bragging did not actually come from any member of the FW orginization.............. but it is good bulletin board material ;)
Congrats gals!!!

The Road to Hawaii/Arkansas #17
The time has come, wish me luck?
I think I’m ready. As I write this I’m waiting for the last load of laundry to come out the dryer so I can finish packing. If I get assigned to one of the Academy games this coming Thursday I may have one more load to do. It has been one long year for me to wait for another chance to try and make it to the National Championships. Last year I felt that I was worthy of such an assignment, but it did not happen. While I was crushed at the time, that decision has motivated me to become a better referee and take another shot this year. I will go and do my best. If selected, I will be overjoyed. If I get passed by I know that all the hard work that I’ve put in over the last year will have not been wasted. I’m a better referee today than I was a year ago. By sharing my experience with you all has created new friendships that would have never come my way.
Last week I spoke of the tune up week that was before me. Last Wednesday I worked a WashingtonInterLiga Semi-Final contest that was a real test. It was a fast moving contest between two great teams (La Espanola vs. Auto Nation) that I was honored to be assigned to as the center referee. The final score was 2-1 and I only had to issue two yellow cards. Last Friday was an AR assignment between the Tacoma Tide and the Abbottsford Mariners. Tacoma won the game 2-0 and both teams presented a challenge for me as an AR. There were some pretty close offside calls to be made and a couple of fouls that I had to initiate as an AR that were helpful to a fellow Hawaii bound referee that was working the center assignment. The two other members of the crew will also travel to Hawaii as well. The weekend had me travel to Bellingham to help with the U16, U17 & U18 LPT’s. As with the other two matches, the six matches up north were the type of games that I knew would get me ready for Hawaii. Four of the six games were nail biters, decided by one goal. The games were back and forth with plenty of action and decision making opportunities. I worked the middle of five of the six games. In two of the games I was lucky to finish without issuing any cards. It was a pleasure to work games where the players came to play and not kill each other.
Now it’s time to focus on the trip. I’ll finish packing when I get through with this entry. In honor of my late mother I am labeling all of my referee stuff. I will be putting the initials RMRK (Ray Moffatte/Redkard) on all of the labels, just in case our team mother does a group laundry run. I’d hate to lose one of my referee jerseys or shorts on the trip. I’ve mentioned before I have fetish for shoes. While it’s was a tough decision I’ve decided to take three pair of shoes with me on the trip. The Addidas F10’s turfs will make the trip for AR assignments (I wear turf shoes as an AR so I don’t trip and fall). I wear soccer cleats while working as a center referee; they allow me to keep up the youngsters on the field. Thus my new Nike Total 90’s will make the trip for center assignments (because of their color “Dark Army with the fluorescent green highlights I hope no one will object to them). The all black Umbros will make the trip (just in case the Nike’s are frowned upon). I’ve already apologized to the other shoes in the arsenal that will be left behind, the Kelme Serranos and the Total 90 turfs. They will be in our hearts every time we step on the field.
The word came down that referees will not be required to wear “dress blues” for this event (blue blazer, gray slacks and tie). We will only be required to wear our referee team shirt and kaki slacks for the meetings that we attend. In the past we’ve worn a gray polo and a green polo as our team shirt. This year we have a “Carolina Blue” shirt with the WYS logo and our name printed on the shirt. To honor my mother once again I chose to have my given name of Raymond on my shirt.
Come Friday myself, Yellow Card (The Wife) and Red Card Waiting to Happen (The youngest child) will be off to the islands to try and reach the second goal of the title of this series of articles. It’s too bad that “The Messiah” (The Grandson) cannot come with us. Wait, if “The Messiah” traveled with me, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on refereeing; I’d be spending too much time playing with him. He and I will make special trip on our own one day in the future.
The 35 referees and 7 staff members will go and try to further cement the fact that the best referees in Region IV and the country come from the state of Washington. I know when I step on the field I will not only be representing myself but all of you as well. I will do my best not to let any of you down. In the past when we arrived and had our first Washington Referee Family Meeting (which we have every night) we are asked to set goals for the event on a piece of butcher paper in our leader’s room. The first years my goal was to referee in a final match; which was accomplished. Last year my goal was to reach the national event; unfortunately I came up short. This year I will write down my goal with three words: Little Rock, Arkansas.
It has yet to be decided if I will give daily reports or continue the once a week entries to this series of articles. In any event I hope and pray that in two weeks I will be writing about my preparations for a trip to the National Event. Wish me luck?

WPS FAMILY CIRCLE FOUNDATION!!!
Here is the story that touched our hearts this week!
My daughter and teammates participated in a run this past weekend to raise money for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis research.
Last November my 18 month old niece developed a terrible limp- she was diagnosed w/ all sorts of things, that turned out to be incorrect.
Finally they diagnosed her w/ JRA. Arthritis and other rheumatic
diseases affect an estimated 300,0000 children in the U.S. Many of these children live with chronic pain and take daily medication in the hope of controlling their illnesses. Interestingly enough, many of these children tend to be young girls. This fact really struck my
daughter, and we though it would be a fantastic to involve the local
soccer community. Delaney sent the following letter to her soccer
team:
Hello all-
I know this is last minute, but Delaney and I will be participating in
a 5k run/walk to benefit Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis
Research/Autoimmune Research. The race is on Sunday June 8, at 8:30 in the morning. Many of these young children (the majority girls) suffer from debilitating pain, and are unable to run, jump, and play. I thought it would be a great reminder to OUR girls, to appreciate their ability to participate in the sport they all love so much- something that these children may never be able to do.
I'd like to think I would have gotten involved in this race at some
point anyway, but our family was also recently effected by JRA. My
niece Addison was diagnosed with this disease in November, after months of unexplained limping. She is doing well, but undergoes bone injections to allow her to walk without injuring her joints. She will be 2 at the beginning of June. I'd love to have as many of the girls as possible come out, wearing their Timbers gear, but understand that it is coming up quickly. I'd be happy to transport as many as I can fit- just let me know! Delaney will be there for sure :)
The girls who came out for the event were truly inspired by all the
children out running (and walking) the 5K. There were two other local soccer teams in attendance. The WSA Pride (all decked out in their yellow and gold), and the Westside Metro Red Rangers (one of the players younger sister was the Grand Marshall). Delaney would like to spread the word about JRA and inspire all the other Pac NW soccer players to look for local Arthritis events and show their support for the kids who cannot play such a fantastic sport!
Great job little ones!!!
And now, an emergency call for thoughts and prayers from our very own Asst Editor!
--- Quote ---I got a call at 7:45 this morning from the school nurse that they had to call 911 for Alynn because she was having major chest pains.
Followed the ambulance to Mary Bridge ER where they ran some tests, but couldn't find anything conclusive yet as to why it was happening.
She is home now resting comfortably but we are still worried until the rest of the tests come back.

"Help! Is there a Doctor in the house?"
A week or so again a poster became incensed that I had given a player on my son's team a cortisone shot in his thigh so he could play. He had received a knock and was visibly wincing and limping and completely unable to play. This was the College Showcase and he was trying to fight through it but was completely ineffective and had to leave. He was mad and his dad was as well. So to make a long story short with his dad's blessing and with the player anxious to return, I gave him a cortisone shot. And lo and behold he received the shot and played the rest of the weekend without missing any time due to his injury! Miracle? Happenstance? Hmmm, goodquestion.
So this week is about the effects of steroid injections and return to play! Is it safe? Is it ethical?
So ,what is cortisone anyway?
Cortisone is in a family of medicines called corticosteroids, which are strong anti-inflammatory drugs. Corticosteroids are used for many conditions. They can be taken by mouth or in a variety of other ways including creams, inhalers, or injections (shots).
Because they have a similar name, corticosteroids are sometimes confused with anabolic steroids. They are not the same. Anabolic steroids are a group of drugs that increase muscle mass and strength. These are often used illegally by athletes and can have many harmful side effects. see Barry Bonds...LOL!
What is a cortisone injection used for?
A cortisone shot is often used to give short-term pain relief and reduce the swelling from inflammation of a joint, tendon, or bursa (sac that provides cushion in a joint). The most common areas I see that require injections are the shoulder for impingement/bursitis/rotator cuff disease, the knee for arthritis and the elbow for tendonitis (tennis elbow). Injections may be given in the heel for plantar fasciitis, the spine for disc disease and into just about any tissue in the body! Reducing the swelling helps relieve pain and discomfort and can speed up recovery from an injury. A shot of cortisone may also be given to reduce inflammation over the whole body (for example, if you have an allergic reaction or a flare-up of rheumatoid arthritis).
These steroids are deposition injections. That is the med is deposited into the site of pain and hangs around until it is broken down by the local tissue. Thus ensuring a relatively longer action than steroids given by mouth.
How is the shot given?
The corticosteroid medicine is usually mixed with a local anesthetic and then injected into the painful area. At first, the shot may feel uncomfortable, but the local anesthetic will help with the discomfort
What happens after I get the shot?
When the anesthetic wears off, the area where the shot was given may be quite sore. I have been called a SOB by some after the anesthetic wore off!! An ice bag on the area for 20 to 30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours after the shot and taking an anti-inflammatory medicine (such as ibuprofen) may be helpful. In many there is NO local pain! Just some soreness. The cortisone will start to reduce the inflammation and give you pain relief within 2 to 3 days. Many get an IMMEDIATE relief. Whether this is from the anesthetic, placebo effect, not sure. But I have given hundreds of shots where the person says "Oh my god, it already feels better!" In some cases, the cortisone will permanently relieve your symptoms. In other cases, the pain relief is temporary and can last anywhere from a couple of weeks to years.
How well the shot works depends on many things, including the amount of drug given, the cause of the problem, if the shot is given in the right area, and other factors.
What are the risks?
Side effects from cortisone shots are rare.Allergic reactions are almost unheard of as cortisone is often used to combat allergic reactions of bee stings, poison ivy ,oak or sumac, asthmatic attacks, etc. Diabetics may have a temporary increase in their blood sugar after a shot.
Possible side effects at the site where the shot was given include:
slight bruising of the skin
shrinkage of the fatty tissue under the skin where the shot was given
loss of skin pigment where the shot was given
increase in pain after the shot
infection
weakening of the tendons or tendon rupture
allergic reaction to the medicine.
Where the cortisone is injected is a huge issue. In general, no site should be injected more than once (unless you are Henry and need to keep playing on that gimpy leg throughout EC!). Tendons that are cordlike should ALMOST NEVER be injected (eg, Achilles tendon, patellar tendon, finger tendons) as the chance of rupture is very high due to the softening effect the cortisone may have on the structure. That said tendond like the elbow (tennis elbow are ijected frequently with rare issue...but they are a differnt type of tendon!)
A bursa is generally safe to inject such as in the shoulder even though the rotator cuff tendons are there!
Joints such as the knee are very commonly injected to reduce swelling and stiffness that may arise as the result of injury or arthritis. NO STUDY exists showing a detrimental effect on the ACL from cortisone although repeated injections CAN HARM cartilage in the knee both from the effect of the steroid as well as the continued overuse that happens during the time when the pain has subsided!
Muscle and fascia may be injected with cortisone. Since these areas are very vascular the cortisone does not deposit quite as long but it seems to do the trick. Trigger point injections are an example of this. And a knock in soccer to the tissue causing swelling and pain is one reason why steroids may be effective. Again no longterm studies have shown deleterious effects on deep injections...yet!
Injury: Do I say YES or NO to cortisone?
So an injury may be chronic or acute. Some injuries just linger and intermittently cause time to be missed because of pain. These are called chronic, like Osgood-Sclatters disease or tendonitis or chondromalacia in the knee and rotator cuff tendonitis in the shoulder. Many athletes learn how to play through it ...or not! Many chronic (ongoing) inflammatory conditions are caused by overuse. If you continue activities that overuse the injured area, the inflammation may return and the cortisone shot will probably not help that much.
An acute injury is generally treated with RICE...RestIceCompressionElevation. Meds like Advil or Alleve may be of some help as well. Simple injuries may respond with return to play in a few days to weeks. So here is where it gets dicey. Your DK is playing in a tournament in front of College Coaches. A good showing is important. But that knock your DK took is making him/her unable to play! And it is aggravating an old condition as well. What to do?
Well , in life there are choices. You can opt to 1) tough it out...not always wise, 2) sit it out...and potentially lose a chance that may or may not present again 3) take a "shot" and get back on the pitch!
Now those of you who find it reprehensible for an adolescent to get a shot, fine. No problem. In a few days or weeks your DK may be back to speed and if the game(s) meant essentially nothing, then nothing lost!
But...and it is a very big but...what if your DK wanted to play and the games meant something.Would you withhold his/her desire to play. I know steroids are dangerous .I just said so! But they are not really dangerous unless overdone. Bottom line...one shot is not the end of the world for those who are impatient to return to play asap.
My feeling is this: I have had steroid shots without issue. I have given steroid shots without issue. That does not make it right or wrong, just the facts.
So, in the right context, with the right player and family, receiving a steroid shot is generally SAFE and generally HELPFUL and I feel ETHICALLY fine!

This weeks topic for the coach is Double Trouble!!!
--- Quote from: "The Coach" ---This week we received two questions-
QUESTION #1
--- Quote ---So, where do the coaches get all the drills they come up with during practice? Do they just pick them up from their old playing days, or do they research training guides, copy other coaches, or do they learn them from going to coaching clinics, or what? Maybe a combination? Do coaches keep a book of drills handy they can refer to for working on certain things, i.e. if a coach wants his team to work on finishing, does he simply turn to page 23 in his notebook of training drills to remember the best drills for working on that? My DD always loved it in the summer when it was real hot and the coach had a practice where the kids played with bare-feet. Also, please explain a bit as to what's on these tests for getting a license, and how do the coaches prepare for taking the tests, or do they? Thanks in advance for the insight!!
--- End quote ---
Great question. I'll start with your first question. All the things you listed are all ways coaches get their drills. They get them through experiences through playing days, through copying other coaches and coaching clinics. One thing you didn't list is they also get them through their own creativity. Sometimes they want to teach a specific topic and take a drill an alter it to get what they want out of it. As far as what it takes to get coaching license that varies on which license you are getting. Its fairly easy to get the First license and progressivly get harder and harder. When you get up to C and B license its not only your knowledge but your ability to do what it is your coaching. However most coaches (95% of you) will either get your E or both your E and D. So for that reason i'll focus on those two. In your E license you will pretty much pass as long as you show up. It's more focused on practices and how to organize sessions. Also they focus on Shooting, Dribbling, Passing, 1 v 1 defense, heading, ect. its usually just 3 days long with two of those days out on the field going through different practices and which coaching points to make during those. They go over the basics and show you how to have your practice flow from one item to another. Also how to focus your practices on certain topics. To be honest I didn't get one thing when it came to pure soccer knowledge however I did learn how to be more efficient in my practices which helped just as much as the knowledge itself. The D license is a little bit more difficult but shouldn't be to hard if you show up and have a good basis of knowledge. They start to focus on your level of knowledge on the skills of the game a little bit more at this stage. At this point you should know how to organize a good practice so now they start to work on how to stop and start your practices at good learning points and how to make those points with max efficiency. At this point they start to work on a little bit harder concepts like group defense, changing point of attack, 3 person runs, ect. They start to teach the basic tacticle coaching at this point. As you go up its less and less about technical skills since they assume you can already do that and more and more about the tacticle side of the game.
Just remember now matter how great you think you are at all this you can always gain somehing by just listening and taking what you can from these sessions.
QUESTION #2
--- Quote ---With all the tournaments and friendlies taking place during the summer months, a lot of teams need to bring on guest players due to vacations, injuries, etc. How do you feel about guest players...and what is the best way to use them?
--- End quote ---
Another great one. This has so many sides to it that it will be hard to really answer all of it. I usually love guest players. I think its a great experience for the team and the player. I like to use a guest player as if they had been on my team the whole year. Why bring a player that you aren't going to treat like part of the team? However, i think its important we are using guest players for the correct reasons. If you are using them not because you actually need them but because you are tying to recruit them then that really opens up the door to some issues. Because of this I find it sometimes difficult in the long run to use guest players from your local rival teams. Sometimes it works out just fine, but other times it starts a whole political mess. I think the best place to get guest players are from teams that are from further away that there is no worry about recruiting them. Think about it what an experience it would be for a Spokane player to get a chance to play for NWN, or a vancouver player to go play for Reign. You get to meet a whole new group of girls/boys and get to probably go to a brand new tournament that your team isn't going to. Plus see what its like to play for a different type of coach. One more plus to a player playing with a team far away from them is it creates more friendships. I have a few players that I know that played for a team 3 hours away. Since then that team has broke apart and those players are playing for 4 different teams now. We went to a tournament and I saw 5 players with 5 different uniforms from all over hanging out together. What a great sight that was.
It is also important to go about things in the proper way. Contact the coach first and make sure its okay to use his players, then contact the player.
If you do it all correctly then it should be a great experience for everyone involved.

"VIEW FROM BEHIND THE WHISTLE"
--- Quote from: "The Ref" ---Myths of the Game and other Nonsense
The Italy vs. Netherlands game gave us a perfect illustration of how poorly the "expert" commentators understand Law 11 and how they contribute to the collection of myths and confusion in the American publics understanding of the game.
In the 26th minute of play, the Italian keeper makes a save by punching the ball away. In the process of making the save, the keeper knocks a teammate three feet over the goal line and off the pitch. The ball is played back into the goal area by a Dutch player and a Dutch teammate (Van Nistelrooy) deflects the ball into the goal.
At the time the ball was played by his Dutch teammate, only the Italian keeper is physically on the pitch between Van Nistelrooy and the goal line. All the commentators had strong opinions on why Van Nistelrooy should have been offside even though another Italian player was clearly just over the goal line.
Folks, this is a good goal!! It is NOT offside and this is a reasonably straight forward decision that any Grade 8 referee should be able to make (another good reason for all players to take the entry level referee course).
A player off the pitch without the referee's permission is considered still taking part in the match. The player is considered to be on the pitch at the location from where they left the pitch.
In this case, the player went off the pitch across the goal line and is considered to be on the goal line for purposes of the offside decision. Therefore the goalkeeper was the second to last defender in this play – Van Nistelrooy was on side! Gooooaaaalllll!!!!
But what if a player is injured? What if the player is unconscious, bleeding or dead just off the pitch? Until the referee stops the match or gives the player permission to leave the pitch, the player is considered on the pitch for purposes of the offside decision (yes, even if dead).
The referee stops the match ONLY for serious injuries (yes, death is considered a serious injury). Whether the player who falls on or off the pitch stubs his toe or breaks his neck, the referee must first ascertain or reasonably believe the injury is serious before he stops the match.
During dynamic play, an injured player can step off the field with the referee's permission to address an injury or equipment problem. Play does not have to stop, but the player must obtain the referee's permission. This can be as simple as a wave or making eye contact with referee and getting some acknowledgement in return. The player cannot return to the pitch without first obtaining permission to reenter.
Does this seem unfair? Would it be fair for defenders to be able to step off the pitch just to place an opponent offside? Would it be fair for opponents to feign an injury solely to stop attacking play?
From USSF ATR (2007):
11.10 PUTTING AN OPPONENT IN AN OFFSIDE POSITION UNFAIRLY
If a defending player moves beyond his or her own goal line or across a touch line to place an opponent in an offside position, the referee should not stop play immediately to caution the defending player, but should allow play to continue. The attacker should not be punished for the position in which he or she has been unfairly placed; however, the referee should caution the defending player at the next stoppage of play for leaving the field of play without the referee's permission.
11.11 DEFENDER LEGALLY OFF THE FIELD OF PLAY
A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position. Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position
And in case folks haven't viewed the play in question:

"My 2 cents worth...The Posters Voice!"
You all know how I feel about this forum. Its my home away from home. I live here when I'm not busy and since I don't work outside the home, I'm here ALOT!
But the last few days on here makes me want to run away!
Can we please stop with the gotsoccer mentality and get back to the wholesome WPS that I know and love?
Yes, we can offer OPINIONS, but to resort to name calling or 'digs' at the other posters is not what the majority of people that come here want to see.
The kudos are GREAT, the love for soccer we share ( boys and girls, young ones and the older sets) is GREAT, the information that we can share is often PRICELESS as sometimes we get the inside info that others aren't privy too. The recaps are WONDERFUL and the Pulse..... well its TOPS!
Seeing my 'family' berating each other just isn't right.
In the words of Rodney King.... Can't we all get along?

Just for that poster that wanted to see us sign our real names in the rant or whatever section!
DEAR EGGY!
Dear Eggy,
You are from Cowtown right? Do you know if any of the girls down there that live in Washington made the Oregon Regional team?
Thanks,
Washington ODP
Dear Wash. ODP
Yes, Eggy is from Cowtown. Eggies DD plays with the Oregon ODP G95's. The Oregon Regional team was just announced. Their are four players from Washington on the Regional team and two that are alternates.
Two players are from the Timbers, one from Sunderland and one from the Nemesis. The two alternates are from the Timbers.
Stockton should be a load of fun.
