Saturday June 21st 3:08 Hawaii Time

Today has been a long one.  Up at 5:15am in the morning for my 8am GU12 Semi Final Assignment as AR1 between Cal North (Mustangs) vs Arizona (Serreno).  It was a tight match between two equal teams.  Both teams battled back and forth with the Mustangs sneaking one in midway through the second half.  The debrief was short and sweet with the entire crew receiving passing marks.

I just finished shaving the dome and taking a shower getting cleaned up for the meeting.  Now it's time to get changed,  It's time to go.  Wish me luck?  Hopefully I'll have some good news for you later in the day.

Redkard is going to Delaware
« Reply #31 on: June 21, 2008, 09:44:10 PM »

I just wanted to be the first to announce because he is my best referee friend, and we have gone through a lot of stuff together with losing our mothers, and they are both looking down upon us.

Redkard has been selected to go to the Director's Cup in Delaware.

I wanted to let everyone know first, so go ahead and congratulate him.  I am heading to the family meeting, and I am sure Redkard will tell you his feelings about it.

I meant what I said downstairs Redkard, I am very proud of you!!!!!!

Thank You Joemma for the kind words.

I found out earlier today that we came short in our attempt to go to Arkansas for the National Championships.  While we were shooting for the stars, we ended up landing on the moon; in this case Kirkwood, Deleware.  The US Youth Soccer National Directors Cup Schedule to be exact.  The Directors Cup is for states with less than 30,000 registered players; who don't have the numbers to compete with the recognized powerhouse states.  The event will take place July 17-20.

While I waited for list of names to be announced (they started with the Directors Cup, then ODP Regional Camp and finally the National Championship) they started with one of my fellow Washington referee Levi Rippy (who had to leave early due to a family emergency) they then announced Cal South referee and said my name.  Thus there was some confusion in the room.  I didn't get a chance to be disappointed.  I was just happy to hear my name be called.  While I am disappointed, I'm overjoyed to be able to represent our state at a national event.

The ODP Regional list was annnouced next.  Zach Pendt (Bremerton) and John Towers (Mt. Vernon) from Washington made the list.

The National Championship list was next.  Niall Trimble (Spokane) and Scott Groce (Kent/Returning referee and Head of the Region IV Delegation) will represent Washington in Little Rock Arkansas next month.

Finally the assignments for tomorrow's finals were annouced.  14 of the 35 Washington Referees received assignments for Sunday's contests.  I will be the 4th Official of the BU13 match between Colorado Rush Nike (Colorado) vs ISC Strikers (Cal South).  The Colorado Rush Nike fans are a piece of work.  Apparently today during the semi-final some fans ran onto the field after they scored a goal.  Sounds like my kind of game.

Now I'm off to the shoe shine ceremony (a tradition of the finals crews for picture taking and pregame discussion) and to then go and get my finals uniform (some new adidas cool referee uniform that we see on TV).

Thanks for all of the good vibes you have all sent in my direction; they worked!

The Tournament is over, heading home

Sunday June 22nd 9:02pm Hawaii time

I'm sitting in the airport waiting for my flight home.  We're suppose to leave at 10:10pm, but the flight is already delayed until 10:45pm.  Today was an early rise for me.  Had to be at the field by 9:00am; but I also had to pack, make arrangements for a late checkout, pay for the hotel parking, work my match, get back to the hotel and check out by 2pm.

Packing was easy; The Wife (Yellow Card) took care of the laundry this week so I didn't have too much smelly stuff to carry home.  The hotel was cool about giving us a late checkout time (that allowed The Wife and the youngest child to stay behind and pack their bags for the trip home.

The game was a dud.  The crew was ready for the wild Colorado Rush Crowd (someone ran onto the field after they scored goals in the semi's).  Our pregame created a plan for a repeat performance.  Silent signals between AR2, myself and the center referee; would trigger a call for field marshals to come an escort any wrong doers away from the field.  Well too thing happened today.  First the "Crowd Line" was accented by being roped off to prevent anyone from coming onto the field.  Second, the Cal South Team (Irvine Strikers) jumped out to a 4-0 lead by half time.  Thus all we had to do is wait and listen for rude and distastefull chants towards the Irvine players.  It never happened.  My job as the 4th Official was a piece of cake.  I spoke with both coaching staffs prior to kickoff on how they were to act within the technical area and they followed those instructions to the letter.  Besided the natural frustration of a 5-1 outcome; the game was a yawner.

After my debrief, I rushed back to the hotel to shower and officially check out of the hotel.  A fellow referee (joemma) hung out with my family (he had a 9pm flight) as will killed time prior to heading for the airport.  We went last minute souviner (spelling) shopping for family members and co-worker.  We got a bite to eat at Dave and Busters (wish we had on in Washington).  We also made one last drive past  Waikiki Beach (some people need to put more cloths on).  After dropping of fhe rental car off it was off to the airport.

While the trip was been a wonderful experience I feel sad that we didn't meet our ultimate goal.  I hope that I haven't dissapointed those who have followed this journey.  Hopefully the trip to Delaware will be the springboard to trips to Lancaster Double Dip the Far West Regional in California for the 2009 Far West Regional and to the National Championships in Massachusetts.

Sounds like you did a great job there and had some fun while you were at it.
Congratulations on getting the Delaware assignment.
Your write ups were great.  I hope to see more from your trip back East.

After a long night on an airplane and lengthly drive from Vancouver BC to Tacoma; I'm finally home.

After a nap and starting some laundry it was time to watch my youngest play in and academy game.  Unfortunately his team came up on the short end of the stick.  He did alright, picking up a yellow kard along the way.

As I get ready for the Directors Cup, I'll be back to traveling the roads of Washington.  First stop, Diadora Cup this coming weekend.

Great write-ups and insights Ray.  I love the 'life as a referee' stories and behind the scene perspective.

Congrats and wish you more success in the future.  Thanks for all you do for soccer.
