REST IN PEACE TIM RUSSERT!

...Well known Meet the Press Host passes on....

BREAKING NEWS!  TIM RUSSERT DIES AT 58

WASHINGTON - Tim Russert, NBC News’ Washington bureau chief and the moderator of “Meet the Press,” died Friday after being stricken at the bureau, NBC News said Friday. He was 58.

Russert was recording voiceovers for Sunday’s “Meet the Press” broadcast when he collapsed, the network said.

He had recently returned from Italy, where his family was celebrating the graduation of Russert’s son, Luke, from Boston College.

No further details were immediately available.

Russert was best known as host of “Meet the Press,” which he took over in December 1991. Now in its 60th year, “Meet the Press” is the longest-running program in the history of television.

But he was also a vice president of NBC News and head of its overall Washington operations, a nearly round-the-clock presence on NBC and MSNBC on election nights.

He was “one of the premier political journalists and analysts of his time,” Tom Brokaw, the former longtime anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” said in announcing Russert’s death. “This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice.”

In 2008, Time Magazine named Russert him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Timothy John Russert Jr. was born in Buffalo, N.Y., on May 7, 1950. He was a graduate of Canisius High School, John Carroll University and the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He was a member of the bar in New York and the District of Columbia.

Senate staffer before entering journalism
After graduating from law school, Russert went into politics as a staff operative. In 1976, he worked on the Senate campaign of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-N.Y., and in 1982, he worked on Mario Cuomo’s campaign for governor of New York.

Russert joined NBC News in 1984. In April 1985, he supervised the live broadcasts of NBC’s TODAY show from Rome, negotiating and arranging an appearance by Pope John Paul II, a first for American television. In 1986 and 1987, Russert led NBC News’ weeklong broadcasts from South America, Australia and China.

Of his background as a Democratic political operative, Russert said, “My views are not important.”

“Lawrence Spivak, who founded ‘Meet the Press,’ told me before he died that the job of the host is to learn as much as you can about your guest’s positions and take the other side,” he said in a 2007 interview with Time magazine. “And to do that in a persistent and civil way. And that’s what I try to do every Sunday.”

Cuomo, Russert’s onetime boss, wrote of Russert: “Most candidates are not eager to present themselves for Tim’s incisive scrutiny, which is fed by his prodigious study and preparation. But they have little choice: appearing on ‘Meet the Press’ is today as vital to a serious candidate as being properly registered to vote.”

Russert wrote two books — “Big Russ and Me” in 2004 and “Wisdom of Our Fathers” in 2006 — both of which were New York Times best-sellers.

Emmy for Reagan funeral coverage
In 2005, Russert was awarded an Emmy for his role in the coverage of the funeral of President Ronald Reagan. His “Meet the Press” interviews with George W. Bush and Al Gore in 2000 won the Radio and Television Correspondents’ highest honor, the Joan S. Barone Award, and the Annenberg Center’s Walter Cronkite Award.

Russert’s March 2000 interview of Sen. John McCain shared the 2001 Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence in Television Journalism. He was also the recipient of the John Peter Zenger Award, the American Legion Journalism Award, the Veterans of Foreign Wars News Media Award, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Journalism Award, the Allen H. Neuharth Award for Excellence in Journalism, the David Brinkley Award for Excellence in Communication and the Catholic Academy for Communication’s Gabriel Award. He was a member of the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame.

Russert was a trustee of the Freedom Forum’s Newseum and a member of the board of directors of the Greater Washington Boys and Girls Club, and America’s Promise — Alliance for Youth.

In 1995, the National Father’s Day Committee named him “Father of the Year,” Parents magazine honored him as “Dream Dad” in 1998, and in 2001 the National Fatherhood Initiative also recognized him as Father of the Year.

Irish America magazine named him one of the top 100 Irish Americans in the country, and he was selected as a Fellow of the Commission of European Communities.

Survivors include Russert’s wife, Maureen Orth, a writer for Vanity Fair magazine, whom he met at the 1976 Democratic National Convention; and their son, Luke.

HEADLINE STORIES

In the last couple of issues I have asked; "Why do you support McCain...or...Obama"...

A McCain Supporter emailed the Newsletter their thoughts on McCain (see below)...An Obama supporter was asked to comment on what was emailed to the newsletter (see print in blue below).

Enjoy the "Tit for Tat"

Why McCain????

Well, probably the single biggest reason to vote for McCain is because your other choice is Obama!  Here's some things you may not know about Obama...
Obama “worked” as a Civil Rights activist in Chicago, but has never held a productive job.  He has never even run a corner hot dog stand, or met a payroll, or managed anything besides his political offices and his speeches.  Now he wants you to believe that he should be CEO of the most powerful and complex nation in the world, and be Commander In Chief of our armed forces???  I think not.

It’s called a life of public service. How is that not productive? Helping people retrain themselves and get employed is not productive? When someone works for a nonprofit organization, brings communities together, helps start afterschool programs for kids, and lowers the unemployment rate in a large city like Chicago, then they must have a strong sense of fiscal responsibility. Furthermore, when someone is incredibly intelligent, open-minded, calm, and an eloquent communicator, their experience matters less.  That is why CEO’s of major companies don’t hire the 50 year old with 14 years experience, they hire the young, idealistic, energetic graduate with only a couple years experience. Why? Experience does not mean better, neither does it mean worse. On the one hand, it may mean less training, but it can also mean retraining, and as any teacher can tell you, it is easier to teach someone the first time, then reteaching them something they have learned wrong the first time. (Speaking of "never had a productive job".....So I guess being a professor of Constitutional law at Chicago university law school for 12 YEARS, being the director of the DCP (development of community projects) with an annual budget of 400K, or working as an Asst. Attorney from 1993-2002 don't  count huh? LOL)

For twenty years he’s gone to an “afrocentric” church that hates whites, hates jews, and blames America for all the worlds perceived faults.  He then repeatedly covers up for the pastor and the church.  He claims that he could not confront his pastor, yet he would like you and I to believe that he has the ability to confront North friggin Korea, Iran, etc.????  Yeah right!!!!
I did not go to this church, but I don’t think they “hate whites and jews”. I know Obama does not hate whites and Jewish people. Do people keep forgetting that his mother and grandparents, with whom he lived where white. He loved them dearly.  He is grateful to the Jewish people for their role in the Civil Rights Movement. He has talked about that in his first book, which he wrote as he was leaving law school. I cringe when I hear people use the word “jew” to mean a Jewish person, and am more suspicious when they use smaller case.  It is easier to confront strangers who you have little in common with, then a long lost friend who has hurt you. Anyone who has any heart and had any kind of life knows that it is harder to confront a loved one than someone you don’t know.

Obama's father deserted him and his mother when he was very young, and went back to Kenya.  His mother turned around and married an Indonesian Moslem and they all went to Jakarta Indonesia where Barrack was enrolled in a Moslem school.   Yes, I am as glad as anyone we have freedom of religion in this country, but do you really want a man who was brought up in Moslem schools running our country right now?  I didn't think so.

First of all, that is not how you spell Muslim. This shows your ignorance. Secondly, I don’t want someone who is a fundamentalist Christian in the Oval Office, nor do I want a man whose wife spent five years faithfully raising their 3 children while they were being held as POW only to get dumped immediately when he returns because she got in a car accident. Being brought up in an multicultural environment gives one insight into how they think,  thereby communicating more effectively.

If that alone isn't enough to get you to vote for McCain, then here are some additional reasons why you should:

Election 2008: What's at Stake?

America Faces a Dangerous, Relentless Enemy in the War Against Islamic Extremists - We face an enemy that has repeatedly attacked us and remains committed to killing Americans and the destruction of our values.
We do not face a war against Islamic Extremists. That is propaganda being spewed from Fundamentalis Christian Extremists. I know, I hear it all the time on the fundamentalist christian radio here in Arkansas. They are not commited to killing us because we exists, just as we are not committed to killing them because they exist, although there are some on both sides who have said that (they are rare).  You watch Fox News too much.
This election is about who is best prepared to lead and defend our nation and its global allies as Commander-in-Chief from day one. This election is about making sure we have the experienced leadership to guide us to victory in this war, protect the nation against future terrorist attacks, and support our troops and first responders who are on the frontlines of the war. This election will decide whether we choose to fight or announce surrender. It will decide whether we have a president who dangerously weakens U.S. security or strengthens it; whether we will flinch and retreat or fully engage the enemy on multiple fronts. We need decisive leadership with the vision and experience to guide our country and the world through this challenge. Having a courageous Commander-in-Chief who is willing to lead us in this war, rally our democratic allies and defeat our enemy to secure a broader peace is what's at stake in this election.
There are some wars in which victory is not well defined because the wars are not well designed, and are not about defending ourselves. We invaded Iraq without provocation. Do you remember? It was a “preemptive war”, which means we attacked “before they could attack us”. Now that we know they were never going to attack us and had no WMD (actually I knew this back in 2002 along with OBAMA), we know that we were the aggressors. McCain has not defined victory, nor has he explained how he is going to ensure there will be no casualties. By the way, since there are casualties, does this mean we should leave? If there are no casualties, he is saying we should stay. Is the converse true? We need a person with intelligence, vision, leadership, courage who is willing to lead us AWAY from war. How much war do you want?

America is at an Economic Crossroads - Government spending is out of control.
So let’s continue spending 12 billion a month in Iraq while we cut taxes for the wealthiest few, hence decreasing the revenue the government brings in while increasing the amount it spends. You don’t have to be a mathematician (which incidentally, I am) to know that 0  minus something positive is a negative number.
A Democrat elected President will join hands with a tax-and-spend Democratic Congress and subject Americans to enormous tax increases.
Only 5% of the Americans that can afford it will have their taxes increased. Those who make less than $200,000 will get a tax break.
Even now, the tax code is too complex and too burdensome. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid -
the government's promises to seniors and those in need - must be modernized. You mean they have to get rid of it and let everyone fend for themselves. I’m sure grandma will be proud of you. (Well, if you’re a rich family, she might be)
Too many American workers are unprepared by non-performing schools and shackled by outdated government employment assistance programs.
So let’s bankrupt the public schools that are struggling, and have school vouchers so that the rich people don’t have to mingle with the working class.
America needs experienced leadership to guide the U.S. economy to greater prosperity, control government spending, keep taxes low, For the middle class, not big corporations save Social Security and protect the American worker.By not privatizing it. Americans want a leader willing to offer straight talk as Obama does!
and make the hard calls necessary to ensure a brighter future for our children and grandchildren like to sticking to your principles when voting for the war, speaking against diplomacy with our enemies, and supporting the gas tax holiday was the popular thing to do in Washington. The long-term strength of our economy and financial stability of American households are what's at stake in this election.
This is why we need to elect Barack ObamaAmericans have Lost Faith and Trust in their Government - Americans have lost trust that their government and its elected officials will serve the Nation's interest and not their own. Special interests have too much influence in Washington.
This is why we need to elect Barack Obama who does not take money from PACS or lobbyists and has inspired the DNC to do the same
Americans want a courageous leader who will stand up to the trial lawyers and labor bosses and other special interests, govern by principle rather than political expedience, keep their promises, and solve problems instead of leaving them for our children. Restoring Americans' confidence in their government is what's at stake in this election. This is why we need to elect Barack Obama
Americans Want Judges who will Strictly Interpret the Law and not Legislate from the Bench - The next president will appoint many federal judges and perhaps even a Supreme Court justice. The recent victory on partial birth abortion is an example of how important the Supreme Court is in protecting our values and interpreting the law as it is written. Overturning Roe vs. Wads would be legislating from the bench
America needs a president who will provide strong moral leadership.Shopping around for the richest woman in the country while you are still married to the woman who waited for you while you were a POW, and making it public that you are having an affair, then dumping your current wife to marry a rich, cheerleader is not my idea of a man with strong moral leadership. Someone who was voted the first african-american president of the Harvard Law Review, who was offered six figure salaries out of law school but turned them down to keep his promise and return to Chicago as a community organizer for a whopping $20000 a year is my idea of strong moral leadership!
A Democrat president will appoint judges who make law with disregard for the will of the people, but to the cheers of those advancing a liberal social agenda. The word liberal means:1.free from prejudice or bigotry; tolerant: a liberal attitude toward foreigners.   2.open-minded or tolerant, esp. free of or not bound by traditional or conventional ideas, values, etc.   3.characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts: a liberal donor.   4.given freely or abundantly; generous: a liberal donation.   5.not strict or rigorous; free; not literal: a liberal interpretation of a rule. ~ Websters Dictionary
America needs a leader who recognizes that that the people and states should decide what's best, not the courts. The future of the U.S. Supreme Court is what's at stake in this election. This is why we need to elect Barack Obama.

What are the Bold Solutions?

Winning the War Against Islamic Extremists. Radical Islamic extremists are a relentless threat to America, its citizens, and the values we share. In the words of the al Qaeda leadership, Iraq is the central battleground of this war. We face a fork in the road. John McCain will pursue our opportunity for victory in Iraq, strengthen our hand in the larger war against Islamic extremists, and make our nation more secure. Democrats will fold our tents, embolden our enemies, throw the region into instability, and increase the risks faced on our home soil. To concede defeat now would strengthen al Qaeda, empower Iran and other hostile powers in the Middle East, unleash a full scale civil war in Iraq that could lead to genocide, and destabilize the entire region as neighboring powers come to the aid of their favored factions. John McCain is best prepared to lead and defend our nation and its global allies as Commander-in-Chief from day one. He has the experience and leadership to defeat our enemy and secure a broader peace.
Repetition and Redundancy.

Reforming Health Care for All Americans.
Reforming Health Care for All Americans. Real reform will put families in the driver's seat of our health care system. Tax Credits are not going to help me with health care. Get real.
The road to reform does not lead through Washington and a hugely expensive, bureaucratic, government-controlled system. John McCain will harness competition to offer more affordable insurance options for as many Americans as possible, leveraging the innovation and cost-effectiveness of our nation's firms to put an end to existing rigid, unfriendly bureaucracies. He will build a national market where insurance is more available, portable, and accessible across state lines; in which patients' rights are respected and their information is under their control; and one in which people may save more in tax-exempt Health Savings Accounts. He will assist those who need help in getting private insurance.
His idea amounts to the gas tax holiday. It’s a pittance. $5000 tax credit will not help a family who needs health insurance. It’s almost $500 a month for the premiums. Multiplying the premium by 12 yields the uncomfortable truth that I’m still paying deductible, $2000, out-of –pocket expenses $1500, copays $1500. Now add in Dental Insurance, Orthodontists (which are not covered by dental insurance) blah blah blah. It won’t help.

John McCain will provide incentives for a national market - including the reimportation of pharmaceuticals - that offer You want to import the drugs from other companies. NAFTA on drugs? Didn’t the lead toys teach you anything about the regulations enforced in other countries , or lack thereof.
greater transparency about effective patient care, options for preventative care and therapies, and prices so that competition makes it easier for families to navigate toward quality and low cost. He will demand reform to medical malpractice laws to curb abusive lawsuits that squeeze doctors, prevent innovation, and drive up the cost of health care. We need more transparency of prices and quality measures so that patients can make informed choices.
This is why he voted against regulating any of the big lobbies like pharmaceuticals, credit card companies, lenders, mass media market, and made it harder for regular americans to file bankruptcy, even when it was caused by medical bills.

Reforming Government.

Americans have lost trust that their government and its elected officials will serve the Nation's interest and not their own. Special interests have too much influence in Washington. John McCain will bring spending under control, veto wasteful, pork-barrel spending bills every time, and keep taxes low. He will reform a tax code that is too complex and too burdensome. John McCain will modernize Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. He will bring accountability, choice and competition to underperforming schools, so our children are equipped to take the best jobs of the 21st century. John McCain is the only leader willing to make the hard calls necessary to restore faith in our government and build a brighter future for our children and grandchildren. Once again, this is why we need to vote for OBAMA!

IRONIC ISN'T IT??!!

Forget just how amazing it is that the presidential election this year is between Barack Obama and John McCain. Instead, consider the incredibly irony of this fact...., given the type of campaign the political right wants to run:

Only one of these two candidates was born inside the 50 United States. That candidate? Barack Obama. Yet he's the one who was forced to produce his birth certificate....(not saying JM is Not a US Citizen, just pathetic that Barack had to produce his)

...and yes!  Hawaii is a state! ;)
