My DD has been fortunate enough to make the Benson trip two years in a row...the first year, we paid the way and the second year, she lightened her savings account and sent herself (ok, with a bit of help).
I'm posting today to THANK, Bruce and Ginny Benson and Coach Rusty for taking such great care of the kids and for creating an environment where they felt safe, challenged and confident enough to try new foods, meet kids from all over the world (even if language was some times a problem),and push themselves to be the best they could be on and off the pitch.
My player learned more about herself this year than last...maybe because she was a year older and a year more mature...but she seems more confident and focused. She worked hard, found some success, made new friends and learned that she could push herself just a bit harder if her coach needed her to.
If any of you are considering a similar expereince for your young players, I can only say...DO IT!! Have a fund raiser, ask for help from grandparents, convert Christmas gifts to Swedish Kroner and make it happen. I had never traveled outside of the country until last years trip...and to think that my own child is now so comfortable with foriegn airports that she didn't flinch when I told her she would have a three hour lay-over, alone in Copenhagen (she was on a slightly different flight schedule than the team on the way home) says so much about how this experience has changed her.
To the 95's and 94's...well done!! Cherish your medals, your uniforms, your new friends and your memories. Write down what you can, make photo albums asap and lock those memories up tight.
