There actually are quite a few Washington teams at the Lake Oswego Nike Cup. My GU-18s are there...and we play two other Washington teams in our three pool matches. Happens every time I take a team to Oregon :D  :D  :D

We have not been to this one before, but are going this year.  I was a little dissapointed to see our games were at schools and not at a sports park - is there a soccer park down there for this touney to use and we just got the school field games?

Spectator opinion: It doesnt make the games as fun to watch- seems more like a scrimmage than a tourney to play games at some outside, scattered location......oh well - it will be good to see my DK play non-the-less.

There is one sport park has 6 field 2 turf and 4 grass.  Is seems there is only one club that use it for tournaments.  We don't have anything like up there.  A few of the parks have more than one field on it.  Some school have more than one field.  Most of the HS have turf but it would say field 1 for thoughs fields.  Friday traffic will really be bad in that area from about 3pm on so make sure you have extra time getting where you want to go.  Might want to get an Portland map to find different ways to get there.  Any game where you go on I-5 and I-205 will be very busy which will probably be all the games.

Yes, Friday traffic is terrible if you are within 10-20 minutes of Starfire you must leave just before noon.  I left at noon last year for a 5pm game and we didn't get to the field until 10 minutes before the game ended.

We have gone to this tournament for a few years and my only complaint is having to drive to all of the different locations.  When you have two kids in the tournament and they both have games at two or three different fields you feel like you are driving around like a chicken with your head cut off.
I honestly can not count the number of different fields where they have played.

Seem like most all the Portland Tournaments you have to drive around to many different fields.  If any team wants to come to Central Oregon for a Scrimmage.  You can stay at Eagle Crest Resort and walk to the soccer fields for the game.   So let me know not many summer weekends left.  My DD plays U14, and we can try to get another team for your team to play.

Ahh, cant say I am looking forward to this tourney - the more I think about it the more cons it has.

The first game is 1pm on FRIDAY, arrival at what, noon - arent there any local teams for that time slot!!!!  Maybe Everett is considered local to Portland..... I suspect it will take about 3-4 hours to get there from Everett?  How is Friday traffic at that time of day for a noon arrival into Portland?

Well, we probably can't check into the hotel that early, but maybe can do so inbetween games, next game is about 5pm.

Two more games on Saturday.

We know the feeling being a Vancouver team and getting a 9:45am game on a Friday at Starfire.

Traffic shouldn't be to bad at that time.  I see at U14 that all the girls playing at the same time.  It takes us around 3 hours to get there our game is at 3pm which isn't bad but, the U13 girls have a game a 11 am some of them might be gone the night before.  I like the tournament just the fields are all round, that is the big down fall.  LO is a well to do town, they should get some fields there.  The city did put in one last year a truf field it is very nice but it is just one field.

You are kidding right?!

Seriously, this tournament has done an excellent job of letting everyone know what to expect.  Check in is the night before.  We were told EONS ago that there was a good possibility of teams having early friday games, but that they would do their best to have local teams take those slots.  (and the games start at 8AM)

There are Seattle teams who have earlier games than you do.  1pm on a Friday is a LATE game....

When you sign up for a 3 day tournament, you need to be ready to play anytime during those three days......

Really?  I would have never guessed that one!

Now thats kidding for ya!

Keep in mind, Seattle can be up to an hour and half closer to Portland than Everett (traffic depending). A clear run would make Seattle 45 min closer.  Good on them for being closer, maybe they can finish sooner for having that early game!

1pm late game?  If 1pm is the late game than the 5pm is the midnight snack.

Flicks...at least they gave my GU-18s a 2:30 p.m. kickoff Friday, so the girls don't have to be on the road until 8:30 a.m. or so. That gives them a good cushion to get down to Tigard HS, which is where our first match is!

I'm going down Thursday, though, to get checkin out of the way and attend FC Portland Academy's Thursday evening open club training. My daughter coaches GU-11s and GU-18s for FC Portland and she invited me out to observe. Should be a fun weekend as I'll be with my GU-18s but also over watching DD coach her 'pee-wees,' as she calls her GU-11s, in the Nike Cup.

There is also a Portland Timbers game Thursday night if people need thing to do.

5pm game isn't a very good game time then you would have to leave  early for traffic.

Depends where your game is if you want to go down I-5, or get on to I-205 in Vancouver.

The worst traffic spot is I-5 near Delta Park (which is great for tournaments). Since most of you will be heading South into PDX rather than North out of PDX most of the traffic will be going the opposite direction. Unless you are going into Portland between 7-9 am.  DO NOT plan on taking 5-205 and cutting through on 84- 84 is a mess no matter what time it is. You might hit snags on the bridges, but could always do the long 205 loop around.
If you are looking for something to do the both nike and adidas have outlet stores on MLK. ;)

I-5 south the closer you get to I-205 (at the south end) the traffic will be bad.   It will start around I-84 and south with all the going home traffic.

Let's face it, pretty much anywhere in or around Portland sucks during rush hour traffic.  I-5 sucks, I-205 sucks, I-84 sucks, Hwy 26 sucks ... you just never know what the traffic is gonna do down here so leave plenty early.  Last year it took me 90 minutes (normally a 25 minute drive) to get to my daughters game in Sherwood and that's only because I know shortcuts!

My DH always does this too, cuz I don't think he can stand to be sitting!    I'm not convinced he gets there any faster.   :P   At noon  or a little before, your worst traffic will probably be around I-84; that is if they don't lift the bridge for a silly sail boat!    :P

I love this tournament!  It doesn't matter to me that all the games aren't played on turf.  It's actually a little cooler that way.

Good luck everyone!

I did fairly well this year getting around at the Beaverton tourney. Only missed one exit but righted myself quickly cuz I knew where I was!
The only real problem I had was on W26 on Thursday afternoon. Seattle traffic has never even been that bad.

Well, I hope to be trying out a new camera this weekend, so I will be thinking about that as I sit in traffic.

Yikes - man I dislike driving -   I hope it is an easy drive to make.

Ugg - Happy thoughts: new camera, new camera, new camera!

For those of you familuar with this area -

games 1 & 2 for our team are held at Athey Creeek Middle School on SW Borland Rd.

I suspect there would be an hour or so to kill between games.  Are there places to eat/hang out near this middle school or is it in the middle of nowhere?

games 3 and 4 for our team are held at Lakeridge High School on Overlook Drive.

Again (copy and paste from above), I suspect there would be an hour or so to kill between games.  Are there places to eat/hang out near this high school or is it in the middle of nowhere?

Thanks for your help with this - any reply would probably make it easier for me to know if I need to pack meals before leaving the Everett area.

Not much down time between games - I wonder if thats a good thing??

Thank you so very much for this reply.

Yes it helps greatly.  I will copy/paste it into word to print and take with me.

I was so hoping someone would reply and you did - so thank you!

Ive never been fully adventurous about traveling to new areas, places I am unfamiluar with.  You'd think my being a military spouse would cure this thanks to all of our travels, but it has not been cured yet!  So Ill say it again, thanks for your help!

Just take plenty of patience with you when driving down there.

During Beaverton, all the GOOD Oregon drivers must have left for the weekend and replaced them with rude I -have -to -be -there -before -anyone -else drivers, SLOW drivers and men that don't like to do the speed limit in the FAST lane, who then slam on their brakes to show that they mean to stay there!
Dang signs say 55 NOT 50!
Oh and if you have to stop for fast food, I recommend Popeyes Chicken
