My opinion on "unique names":  Okay for a girl it seems like it can actually help make them standout (as long as it not something someone made up on their own   ).  However, it's bad for a boy as it will cause him a lot of grief in school growing up.  Ever heard of the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue"?

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.

But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

If I could go back I would give my kids a little more unique names.  No, not made up like someone has thrown some letters in a bag and pulled them out but Hope Solo is a great name and so is Mia Hamm (my cats name) and they stand out when they are famous

The wife and I started a trend with our first daughter purely by accident when we named her Meghan Aerial, her initials spell MAD.  So the next daughter came along and she became Morgan Anne, then our newest "surprise" addition came along (10-months old) and we carried on the tradition and named her Miley Alexa...the three MAD sisters.

My oldest (16) never really played competitively, but did enjoy rec soccer playing primarily as a fullback, my middle daughter plays for our local club and is a jack of all trades (even a back-up to the back-up keeper) with a powerful left foot and a great shot and now we watch Miley chase the mini all over the floor and I suspect that she will be a Keeper.

Congrats sockem....Oh and I voted girl as you can see that I lean that way! ;)

Congrats Sockem!!!

I went with girl.

Either way -  the biggest, scariest, most life-altering, most fulfilling bundle is on its way!

Neither me or Mrs. Crash had any gray hairs before kids...then poof they came outta the woodwork.

I swear each one can be linked to a specific kid incident; then again, the kids get me to play like I'm 7 again.

Seems they make you old and keep you young at the same time.

On names - Unique is a good way to go, but Monique is nice too ;)

Best,

Crash

Like I said, I think unique is good for girls, and hey Beautiful is beautiful so how could you name her anything else? ;)   Could have gone with Precious for your second one, but I like A'Cappella too.

I vote for healthy...I have one of both and they all come with surprises.  Both of my DKs are one of the reasons that keep me going and inspire me to try harder.  It is amazing the wonder that parenthood can allow our minds and hearts to open up to.  Good luck and think larger then life.  I love unique names....and I also love names that represent ones heritage...the key is say it enough that you know it is right.  I also knew from the moment I had picked the names if I was going to have a boy or a girl...I felt it in my core.

My advice is to keep the names a secret, because you'll eventually tell someone that says YUK!! and then once someone does that it's hard not to want to change.  My DD would have been named Allison if that hadn't happened (my mom said the YUK), but I still love that name to this day.

My favorite name too.    hahahahhahaha...  ;)

I went with girl, we name our daughter Cora.  So far ever school she has gone to she has been the only Cora.  Great Grandma's name, only heard of some Grandma with that name and about 1 or 2 with that name younger than DD.

Not only should the name be unique, it should also be a name that when you scream it at the top of your lungs, it sounds good.  Practice screaming every name you have chosen at the top of your lungs and go with the one that sounds the best, as you will be screaming it a lot.

I yelled every name first and last as if they had just scored the basket in the winning game, like I was the commentator and I sreamed it.  If it sounds the best at the top of your lungs, then you have found your name!!

i had a Cora in my HS... she was beautiful!!!

The name we have chosen is no so much that it is unique as to say it is just not as common as Elizabeth or Jennifer if you will.....it is still used though.... just not as much as the other names....  We loved the 1st name from about 6 weeks into the relationship.... the middle name we liked because it sounded nice..... it just happens it is also a name that is on both sides of the family so we loved it EVEN MORE!!!

Now both sides are pleased they are represented, even if they didn't care for the first name at first announcement.... they have since said, you know if really does sound nice... We like it!    As if they have a choice!!

It must be a girl, because you don't talk about boys names as being "nice".  Whatever little blessing you have, life will change for the better for sure.
