HEADLINES!EFC RED 94'S "SLAMMER" ADVENTURE!!Slammers Tournament
This past weekend the girls from Eastside FC 94 Red went to California to play in the Slammers tournament. This tournament featured some high ranked teams according to "National Soccer Rankings". The bracket the Eastside girls were in included San Diego Surf GU14 White ranked 10th in Region 4 and 34th nationally they also had ASC Express G94 Black ranked 16th in Region 4 to round out the bracket. So the Eastside girls had their work cut out for them.
Game 1 was against San Diego Surf. One of the 1st things the girls noticed was how small this field was. The length of the field was 100 yards maybe, and we think it was more like 90 yards as goal kicks went over midfield and keeper punts went ¾ quarters of the way down the field but it was the width that was really noticeable it was maybe 50 yards wide. The 18 yard box was almost touching the touch line. This is important as it played a big role in the outcome of the game.
The 1st half the Eastside girls looked a little tentative. They were concentrating on marking and doing a great job but the attack just wasn't there. The first 10 minutes saw the ball on the Eastside defensive end with just a couple of runs down the field. During that 10 minutes the Surf were really applying the pressure. They had a girl that could throw the ball in past the far post which caught Eastside off guard a couple of times but the EFC keeper was always there to make the save. Then at the 13 minute mark another Surf throw-in and it seemed like 8 Surf players in the box got one to trickle in past a diving EFC keeper for a 1 - 0 lead. After the goal EFC stepped it up and started to make a few more runs and towards the end of the half the best opportunity came as a bad pass back by the Surf defender to the keeper was intercepted by the EFC forward who took a shot that the Surf keeper got a failing leg on and stopped it. Just unlucky and the half ended with EFC down 1-0.
The 2nd half was totally opposite then the first. EFC dominated play the entire half. With just 2 minutes gone an EFC give and go produced a great shot that just went over the crossbar from 18 yards out. EFC was 1st to every ball and were knocking the Surf players all over the pitch winning every 50/50 ball. 5 minutes later another great opportunity produced yet again a ball going just wide. During the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half EFC had 5 quality shots and a couple of free kicks and a few corners. The game had swung EFC way and you could feel it was a matter of time before one went in. The Surf looked like they were a bit shocked. The EFC girls continued to pound the ball toward the net but to no avail. Final score 1-0 Surf.
Note: The field was labeled as field 2 but later changed to field 3 as it was miss marked. Anyway the field marshals later changed the markers to the bigger field.
Game 2 was against another tough team. ASC Express out of Anaheim ranked 16th in Region 4 and they were our next opponent.. This game was played on the "new" field 2 and was the 2nd game of the day for EFC and the 1st for ASC. WOW what a start to the game less then 3 minutes in a great give and go and BANG!!! 1-0 EFC. It happened so fast that I think a ton of folks were surprised. EFC continued to play like they did the 2nd half of the Surf game. They were all over ASC and winning every 50/50 ball it seemed like it was a matter of time before EFC put another in. With about 5 minutes to go in the half EFC made a run down the right side and a beautiful cross but no one was around for EFC. The ball looked like it was going to go over the end line and all of a sudden an EFC player saves it. She dribbles out a little then lays off a pass back toward the 18. The EFC player there can't quite gain control and the ball moves back about 10 yards when the EFC players turns the ball and shoots. The ball carried into the upper V for a 2 - 0 lead for EFC. Nothing really happened the last 5 minutes and the half ended with EFC up 2-0.
The second half started with ASC having a little more determination. Now the 50/50 balls were even and ASC was putting some pressure on the EFC defense. Still no real threats by either team and were 10 minutes into the 2nd half. Then 2 minutes later ASC gets a breakaway and out comes a charging EFC keeper who blocks the shot, the ball goes toward the sidelines and the EFC outside back gets the ball and all of a sudden EFC is on the counter attack. EFC takes the ball up the right side and crosses to the EFC striker who takes a shot that just misses. Now the play is going up and down the field, with both teams getting off shots. With 5 minutes to go EFC forward gets tackled hard in the box and a PK is called only to be missed. The final whistle blows and EFC win 2-0.
Now we wait. Surf has 8 points, EFC has 9 points and ASC has 0. Both ASC and Surf play each other to end bracket play. With a little help it is possible that EFC can win the bracket. Sorry to say Surf beat ASC 1-0. Final bracket standings Surf 16, EFC 9 and ASC 0.
Game 3 is against SoCal Blues - Kale. From the reports I gather this is the "B" team. What a great team this is. The first half begins and the EFC gals look like they are a step behind. SoCal is putting on a passing clinic and dominating play. Again the EFC defense is bending and SoCal is taking lots of shots but they are from beyond the 18 where the EFC keeper is having no trouble making any of the saves. Little by little EFC starts to get their feet under them. Then at the 18 minute mark EFC's best chance to score comes on a cross and one touch shot right at the keeper. It was a very nice play. The play continued to go back and forth but I have to say SoCal outplayed EFC in the 1st half.
The 2nd half gets underway and I noticed that SoCal is not passing and moving the ball like they did in the first half. You can tell now EFC is the passing team and early on got some opportunities but nothing hit the back of the net. Where the first half belonged to SoCal the 2nd belonged to EFC. The play was mostly in the SoCal defensive end but that was it as the score ended 0-0 and went to PK's. Not sure why this game would go to PK's as this was not a semi-final but a consolation game..
PK's
EFC gets to shoot first. EFC goal, SoCal goal, EFC goal, SoCal goal, EFC miss, SoCal miss, EFC goal, SoCal goal, EFC goal, SoCal goal, EFC goal, SoCal goal, EFC miss, SoCal goal Final 1-0 SoCal

The Final Entry
Fate & Friendship As you all know the soccer calendar officially ends on July 31st of the year, thus this will be the final entry in this series of articles. As usual the topic came out of blue. While the history of the event can be found in the general form of the website:
http://washingtonpremiersoccer.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=9410 The theme of this entry tugs at my heart.
We all know the history of this series, to take you all on the ride from working local games to the National Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas. While that goal was not achieved; it turned out that going to Delaware was not that bad of a secondary prize. It is funny that fate has followed me though out my life. I met the wife in 1986 when she was taking her nephew to soccer practice on the same team that my little brother was playing on; the end result is my son (Red Card Waiting to Happen). Here in 2008 fate took me to Delaware to get a true understanding of what friendship really means.
In retrospect soccer is just a game that we are all apart of. We all have different roles. Some of us are players. Some of us are coaches. Some of us are administrators. The majority of us are parents or relatives of player who play the game. The one thing we all have in common is the passion for the game. My role as a referee has given me an opportunity to share time with you on the field and in the forum on Washingtonpremiersoccer.com.
The past few months have been great. I’ve enjoyed sharing my experiences with you each and every week. It’s too bad that this series is coming to an end. Delaware while not a great as referee; it turned out to be memorable none the less. Starting on Thursday July 17th until Sunday July 20th I had a great time with my fellow referees from Region IV and the other referees and administrators that I met from the other three regions. It’s funny when you get a group of referees at an event like this as with the regional tournament the trust factor is so high it easy to meet, greet and work with people in a short period of time.
The training part of the trip was boring as usual. It’s the same old stuff we referees talk about when we come to this type of an event. We review The Laws of the Game. We focus on the topic of the day. This year the focus has been on man management and bench behavior. Some referees have the ability to do well in this area while others struggle. Among referees we’ve determined while the young up and coming referees are the ones the administration are preparing for bigger and better assignments for in the future; they are the ones who struggle the most in this area. While we old fogies because of our life experience have a leg up on how to deal with tough situations that may pop up from time to time during games. I think it is because we are parents who deal with turmoil amongst our children on a daily basis.
While in Delaware I was happy with my performance; I was disappointed in the opportunity I was given to show what type of referee that I am. In the seven games that I was assigned to, I worked as an AR six times and was in the middle of the field only once. As a result I only worked consolation games on the final day of the competition. The one saving grace was a comment that was made to me by a parent from Wisconsin. During one of the water breaks (it was hot and humid/ 90+ degrees) the parent walked over to me and said that I was the only referee that he would give an “A” grade to. That made up for the disappointment for not being assigned to a championship contest.
On my return trip home is when I realized how fate works in a mysterious ways. My disappointment in not going to Arkansas, allowed me to share some time with my best friend from college, his name is Dave. Dave works in the TV News business currently in Philadelphia. The tournament was held 15 miles south of Philly. He hails from Tacoma as do I. We became friends while pledging a fraternity while at WSU during our junior year. We became really close during our senior year. After graduation I spent time at KSTW for 12 years, while Dave has traveled from Seattle, to Madison, WI, to Minneapolis, MN to Philadelphia, PA. While we have talked on the phone and shared emails on a regular basis over the years, our time together face to face has been limited. Coming to Delaware allowed Dave and I to spend time together going just catching up. Using the phone or sharing emails are one thing, but it doesn’t come close to talking face to face. It was an emotional experience for the two of us. It is funny how a two year college friendship can last the test of time after all of these years.
Friday night we shared stories about our families and our jobs. His two daughters are 13 and 11. They each have played soccer, but their sport of choice is volleyball. He is still happily married to Tracy who he met while we were at WSU. He doesn’t know this, but a bunch of fellows we ran around with had a little crush on Tracy; he was fortunate to be the one that she chose. We all knew that she would end up being a great woman. His eyes still light up when he talks about her. I was proud to show him pictures of my son (Red Card waiting to Happen) and the grandson (The Massiah). I get goose bumps just thinking about my two best friends. We also shared some time about my late mother, Barbara. She liked Dave a lot. She once told me that he was one of the coolest friends that I ever had. The ironic thing is that our visit lasted 93 minutes, what a coincidence, a full game plus some stoppage time.
Prior to meeting with Dave I had a phone conversation with a childhood friend Tim totally out of the blue. While waiting to go a tournament sponsored barbeque, the phone rang, Tim was on the phone. I had Tim’s number in my phone because we recently saw each other at Starfire at the State Cup Finals. He was there with his family watching one of the games. I believe his wife has a friend or a relative whose child was playing in one of the games. We chatted briefly and promised to catch up in the future. The future was 4:30pm Friday afternoon. Tim is 2 years my junior. We went to the same middle school (Gault), the same school (Lincoln) and to WSU together. He was a champion track star. He was the State champion in the 800m in high school and PAC 10 champ in the same event. I remember when he was about to go to Oregon to walk on, we decided to travel to WSU and meet the track coach to see if he could become a Cougar. We were almost arrested for sleeping in the car in the parking lot because we only had enough money for gas for the drive to and from Tacoma and couple of trips to McDonalds.
We both spent our childhoods away from our natural father’s. I have a younger brother (13yrs younger), but Tim was the younger brother type close to my age to me and I was the older brother that he didn’t have. Tim and my sister were actually born in the same hospital in Germany (are father’s were in the military) three months apart. Remember how I mentioned earlier that fate seems to follow me everywhere I turn.
Tim is a successful businessman who trains athletes for a living. He’s happily married with a wife and two kids. His life seems to be in order. We both are busy guys so we only see each other on the rare occasion, unfortunately the last few time have been at funerals, prior to that day at Starfire. Tim just wanted to say Hello. He thanked me for being a role model to him when we were kids. While I was the bookworm/student government/average athlete; Tim was the basketball/track superstar. They say opposites attract. He told me that I was a big influence on his life and he wouldn’t be where he was today without our childhood friendship (I’m shedding a tear right now) (I’m getting soft in my old age). You have to realize that was not the conversation I was expecting to have with him. It brought tears as I listen to him. I’m so proud of him. He was a kid who dreamed of being an NBA player, who would shoot hoops to the wee hours in the night (the neighbors were always complaining to his mother about the noise); now he a successful man with a family of his own. This conversation lasted 15 minutes, the time of and overtime period of soccer game that has to have a winner. That’s irony.
Fate allowed me to ask Dragon to share my experience in trying to get to the National Championships. Fate has allowed my disappointment of not going to Arkansas to turn into two joyous conversations on July 18, 2008 with two friends from my past that I hardly get to see within hours of each other.
Fate has allowed me to meet a number of readers of Washingtonpremiersoccer.com and The Pulse where new friendships have been created and have grown on a daily basis. I’ve met some of you face to face while others send PM’s to me with questions about the game. For that I say thank you. I hope that you all see that I’m more than just a referee. I’m a person who loves the game. I’m a person who loves sharing and learning about the game with all of you.
That is it for the Road to Hawaii/Arkansas now Delaware. As the soccer calendar changes to a new season (2008/2009) new adventures are in my future. I will spend time in Alaska (August 10th -17th) for their State Cup. Yes I will try once again to make the Referee Double (Regional/National Championship Duo). Fate has it that they both are in Lancaster; Lancaster, California and Lancaster, Massachusetts.
What do you thinks of Lancaster Squared?

You have got to read this story borrowed from the News Tribune out of Tacoma:
http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/story/418496.htmlWPS FAMILY CIRCLE FOUNDATION!!!
Here is the story that touched our hearts this week! It is a story that was sent out to several parents of WPFC...it touched us and we want to share:
The family of Luke Beardemphl has asked me to pass along the information (below) to WPFC members. The thoughts & prayers of WPFC members, and the soccer community are with Luke & his family.
To all of our Washington Premier FC members: We have recently learned that one of our club’s long-time players, Luke Beardemphl, was newly diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Stage IIB. Luke has been with the club for many years, having just completed his U18 Academy season. He graduated from Stadium High School last month and was set to attend the University of Hawaii and play soccer there. Luke is now undergoing a 6 month chemotherapy treatment plan at Mary Bridge, which is very close to home for he and his family. The treatment for Hodgkins has a 95% success rate and Luke is very strong. We at the WPFC family are hopeful and faithful that Luke will be completely cured. Luke, I am not sure if you or your family even know of WPS and the Pulse, or of the WPSFCF; But I will say that hundreds of people will have you in their thoughts and prayers from this point forward...get well soon super star!

WPS ....still growing
After attending 6 tournaments already this summer, there is one thing I realized. Whether it is a tournament like Kent Cornucopia or Crossfire Challenge, EVERYONE talks about WPS. “Did you hear what they said about XXX, what do you think?” The one thing that gets me every time, (although it shouldn’t) but it is when parents asked what others think of their team and if Dragon or BK or whoever ranked them too high or too low.
The other question, since most that know me, know I am a regular poster, ask me to post something for them, so “people really know what’s going on”. I used to, now I tell them to post themselves if it is that important.
Every week we all wait patiently for “THE PULSE” have even had a friend or 2 call to ask if it was posted. Surprised that this is Pulse #50 already… Dragon keeps coming up with great ideas, and they keep going and going and….
Just like all the soccer clubs and associations… none of it could be possible without the help of all the VOLUNTEERS!!!!!

Wow #50 already. Well I have loved all the questions I have recieved so far and I want to thank everyone for submitting them. Without them I don't really have a section.
For my section today I'm not going to answer any questions or talk about anything tactical or technical in the game. Instead I want to focus on what this site is doing for coaches and for parents. Its a great thing to have a place where people can learn more about the game, and also interact with each other. As a parent there's a wealth of knowledge on here to tap into. As a coach it gives coaches the ability to get to know each other, share ideas, and also share players. I'm very pleased to be a part of the WPS family and I hope this keeps growing and growing so that everyone can learn from it.
Special thanks goes out to: Squash, Dragon, Brat, ect, ect, ect, and everyone for making this site work.
"VIEW FROM BEHIND THE WHISTLE"Myths of the Game and other Nonsense
Observations while mentoring a referee:
Red player runs with full head of steam to challenge a White player in possession of the ball. White player has head down looking at ball as Red player makes contact. There is nearly simultaneous contact by Red with the White player and the ball (but Red got a good hit on White). Ball is successfully kicked up field and White hits the ground from the collision with Red. Referee is 30 yards away from players. Red parents cheer what they see as a successful challenge. White parents protest the foul play.
Red defender challenges White attacker, successfully dispossessing White by pushing into White's back. White retaliates by first holding then pushing Red. Referee blows whistle and restarts with free kick for Red. Red parents cheer, White parents groan and protest.
White player challenges Red for the ball. As Red tries to dribble around, White trips and pushes Red. Referee is positioned at least 25 yards from players. Red falls and while on her back lifts legs (protecting herself?) towards White's legs exposing cleats as White backs into Red. Referee blows whistle, cautions Red and restarts with free kick for White.
White parents on sideline clap and cheer as referee shows yellow card to Red. A Red parent loudly comments on the "poor" behavior/example of White supporters.
Similar scenarios were repeated too often in this match. The referee is often not in position or not able to recognize the first foul, but is catching the retaliation (referee is a field condition). Each set of parents see the action very differently and lots of action gives them plenty of opportunities to express their differing views.
In this match, the players adjusted to the more physical game – the parents could not! This was a typical "physical" match with parents behaving in "typical" manner. Although not intending to be rude, parents expressed some of their negative emotions as they felt them during the game.
However, through these normal spectator expressions, both sets of parent supporters were annoying each other. The match ended with a fair result and the parents were all friendly and courteous to each other after the game. Why did the parents not exchange strong words or get into a brawl? Because despite their frustrations, they chose to behave responsibly!
What's the point? If you go to a competitive game and spend your time listening to the opposing parents, you will ALWAYS hear words you may not like and/or opinions opposite yours. Don't go looking for reasons to get your "feelings" bent out of shape. It's not about you and your parenting know-how.
Sideline problems among parents occur when parents start competing with each other instead of enjoying the game; or because parents as a group fail to contain the one idiot parent on their team; or because they begin to follow the example of the one idiot parent.
Your kids are displaying some very tough skin out on the pitch. Be proud and try to emulate your kids' strength.
THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO MMMMMMMMMMMM.........The Rumor Mill**Island girl is Back at NWN's...but she is NOT on the 94 team! She is guestin' with the 93's this last weekend at Slammers and Rumor has it she may stay with them!

"My 2 cents worth...The Posters Voice!"Brat reflects on 50 issues of the Pulse!
For almost 50 issues I have been a part of the Pulse either helping Dragon with snippets I've heard, pictures and videos I've taken or the real scary part, DOING the Pulse!
For me, going out and watching games and taking pictures isn't work, its great fun!
I get to see all kinds of DK's at their best ( and sometimes at their worst) along with their CP's that most are truly in it for the kids. Yeah, there are a few 'out there, over the top' CP's, but we all can't be perfect... someone has to give us something to talk about in the Pulse!!
I believe the Pulse will be around a long time. As long as there is soccer to talk about, pictures to take and people to read it, it WILL be there!
Thanks Dragon for giving me a reason to have a soccer addiction.
Will you now talk to my family so THEY understand?
HAPPY 50th Issue !
**and now due to Eggy's retirement, we have a new advice columnist. Don't blame Dragon for the "title" of the section, Wolfy demanded the name or he wouldn't do it... LETTER'S TO THE MAN-RUG!
This guy tried to get the old tart to start dishing out my advice to you rubes last week. Here is the reason why she refused bubs!First of all, thanks for doing this. We really appreciate it
But I beg, plead and implore you to be nice to our readers.... At least for the next 2 weeks LMAO.
As a parent of a competitive soccer player in MI, I’m faced with a dilemma concerning the character of the team’s head coach. I have noticed the head coach is not 100% truthful with the girls, has players on the roster who are on the team for political reasons and not the quality of their game, and openly dislikes parents who question how the team is managed off the field.
Why stay? The team plays in the area’s best youth soccer club; the head coach has an impressive, decade-long track record, and has placed many girls in successful college programs. Plus, I have seen improvement in my daughter’s abilities on the field and she truly enjoys playing with teammates she is close to. When I research alternative clubs in the area, I hear many pros and cons that lead me to believe youth soccer utopia at the highly competitive level doesn’t exist. These are many issues on many of the teams.
My question – should I take the good with the bad while I continue to look for a suitable alternative? My gut tells me to get off this team as soon as a better situation becomes available, but I’d like to know how common is this dilemma?
First off toots you have flipped your wig when you should be in the kitchen flipping jacks and pouring me some brew. This guy is not going to answer a question for some auto worker rube who's cub plays for some lame team no one has heard of. The love train will answer questions only addressed to him from all his fans.
