Entry #3 - “Sports Photography”

Photography is a major force in explaining man to man.
~ Edward Steichen

     Today, I received an email notifying me that my camera and lens were on their way home via FedEx and I should see them soon.  Have they been missed?  Maybe, considering I did not have my darling duo by my side in June for the boys LPTs.  But my gear’s absence was as good a timing as could be, I suppose, since the soccer teams I’ve been photographing are in between tournaments.   In a way the camera and lens picked a good time to have a breakdown – it’s too bad they did not consult with me first, just a week later and LPTs would have been covered.

     Error code 99 – that catch all reason for camera illness needs to pay a visit to the circular file and never return!  Who would have thought that within this age of wondrous technology we would have Error code 99 - which is basically Canon’s nice way to say FUBAR, we don’t know what the heck is wrong send it in for service.  Let me take this chance to rephrase: you, the customer, have too much fleece so we, Canon, will take some off your hands!  If only I could have given them my least favorite fleeced hoody instead of the dollar amount they asked for – oh right, wrong kind of fleece – would a lamb’s coat do – oh right, I am the lamb!  Yes, the repair costs were necessary to protect the initial purchase investment along with my integrity toward the hobby, and the never forgotten task of fulfilling the player’s desire for photos to put on myspace.   Thankfully my insurance company stepped in and covered the repair – gee imagine that, the insurance company posed as a knight in shining armor holding a soccer ball, a very cool mental photograph!  I like it!

The Equipment you'll leave at home, you'll need the most. You're always out of film when you'll have the best opportunity.
~Murphy’s Rule

     So why am I sharing this?  As Ken Rockwell, a photographer like the rest of us says: “No matter how advanced your camera is you still need to be responsible for getting it to the right place at the right time and pointing it in the right direction to get the photo you want.”  So, according to him, I fell way short at LPTs this year!   This situation presented a wonderful opportunity for me to grow and learn, and more importantly for others to enjoy carpe diem photography – I not only like this, I love it!

     You see, when my dearest husband last year fed my hobby with a big lens (hey, he didn’t loose out on purchase, he got the chance to take care of the an all important honey-do Christmas wish list item), it caused a stir – not only in me regarding the new ability I had to get in-your-face snapshots from afar – but a stir along the sidelines in several ways.   AR’s now had someone new to speak with, kind words like: “Lady, watch out I need the space you’re taking pictures from to patrol the game.”  On another occasion, I learned the hard way from a very astute AR about standing in the sacred field-side space between the 18 and goal – I told him I wanted to watch the game from the field, not my car so I would never stand beyond the 18 close to the goal again.

I also came to understand that ARs are not interested in seeing instant replay snapshots of their off side calls – maybe one day, if the soccer industry will allow on-the-spot play reviews, I will make a fortune with an instant replay deal!  As I was seen more and more on the fields with my camera setup, I came to know something else about the stir that me and my gear caused – the professional photographers hired by tournaments wish to see me part with all my gear for $1000.  Not once, not twice, but three times I was approached about this.  Come on fellas, if you want to see me part with my gear, at least make the offer more appealing – imagination, and additional green backs, would be a good thing to use at this stage in gear parting negotiations!  Well, maybe now they know about the Error Code 99, I won’t be selling anything, so all will be right with the world again.

     Aside from the ARs and the professional photographers, the most important stir I noticed was when other side-line parents would keep their cameras in their bags thinking my big lens will cover the team’s photography.   Sure, I get some decent photographs and share them at no cost – but what I believe is invaluable are others taking photos as well creating a nice mix for the team to enjoy!  I have a new commercial idea for Master Card:  Camera xx dollars, Lens xx dollars, Everyone taking photos: priceless! This can’t happen if the side-liners keep their cameras bagged up – so when my gear was out of commission I asked others to seize this opportunity, open those bags and snap away.  In thinking about the US Woman’s gymnastic team, small can be powerful – so even the tiniest of cameras can produce at least a thousand words of interest from one good shot.  The question becomes: how to make that good shot happen?

There are several tips I can think of to help – things I’ve noticed that seem to assist this rather green armature create a decent collection of photos.

AIR GUITAR,  AIR CAMERA

When photography was invented it was thought to be an equivalent to truth, it was truth with a capital "T".
~Vicki Goldberg

     Before pulling out your camera, watch a game as if you were taking photos.  Think of your blinking eye as the shutter and blink each time you see a good shot. Next, sync your trigger finger in rhythm with your blinking eye. As Ken Rockwell also mentions: it's entirely an artist's eye, patience and skill that makes an image, and not the tools.   Photography geek alert: you might want to take these photography practice runs even further and hold your fingers out in front of you forming a boxed frame to see just where on the field you would like to stand for the best shots possible.  As I learned, there are areas on some fields during certain games that you are not suppose to stand – many times, though, spectator standing regulations are not enforced.

GET TO KNOW YOUR CAMERA SETTINGS

You know what a camera is? A mirror with memory.
~Unknown

     Many times smaller point and shoot cameras will give surprisingly glamorous shots – the trick is to set your camera to its best setting possible for your photography needs – sometimes that means taking the camera off automatic and manually changing a particular setting.  One reason to do this would be to turn off the flash which is not often needed outdoors and understanding that a generic flash helps objects only within a few feet of the camera – certainly not a soccer field.   Take some time to read your camera’s manual or online information sources and then push those suggested settings to the limit.  Hint: carry a small notebook with you and jot down the settings (exposure, speed) you used while taking your photos.  Some of the more complex cameras will record that information along with the photo file.  Knowing this information will help better decide what to do or try next time you take photos.  Some cameras will offer different save as file size settings (sometimes known as the quality image setting) – choose the largest setting possible and be prepared for some after game editing when taking photos of the full field w/o a zoom lens.  When using a large file setting, distance shots can be zoomed and cropped using photo editing computer software avoiding that pixilated look; smaller file settings make zooming and cropping distance photos difficult.  If you know your camera’s lens will not give you good results taking photos of the entire field, focus on the action that comes close by and don’t spend time on those far away shots.  One of the most difficult tasks to master with sports photography is watching the game through the viewfinder.  Once this is mastered the sideline parents won’t need to ask you:  Did you get that shot?

Taken from across the field, using a smaller file setting when taken.  During editing, photo is zoomed and cropped and shows up blurry/plixilated.

Taken from across the field, using a larger file setting when taken.  During editing, photo is zoomed and cropped and shows up clear, even picks up the rain.

BALL FRAMING = AWESOME COMPOSITION

'To the complaint, 'There are no people in these photographs,' I respond, 'There are always two people: the photographer and the viewer.'
~ Ansel Adams

     When I taught Developing Black and White Photography at a military hobby shop in Iceland, I asked those participating in the classes to observe the situation to photograph and think about the final desired result – take the snapshot with the eyes first.  With B/W photography, it’s about lighting and shadows; for soccer, framing the ball is a key element to think about.  At times, one of the biggest mistakes I’ve made in soccer photography is focusing on the player – so ask yourself, what holds more of the action: the player or the ball? Unless the ball is within the player’s reach many times players are rather stationary/boring photography subjects waiting for the ball to arrive.  IMO, a great sports related photograph shows action so the camera should be trained to follow the ball, not the players.  Hint: to frame the ball and capture the player’s actions with the ball, try making sure the ball appears in the lower third of your viewfinder for ground balls or the upper third in your viewfinder for air balls.   This gives enough space to include both the player and the ball in the frame for an action shot.  Also keep in mind, for creative framing, full body snapshots are not always necessary and can waste framing space.

 Lower third framing. Upper third framing.

     Well, I can quickly report that it took me all day to write this entry – and now my gear has arrived via FedEX w/o Error Code 99 – let’s hope!  Maybe this little bit of insight will offer some assistance to anyone with an eye for photography – if you’re blessed you have not one, but two!   No matter who is out there with you taking pictures, I encourage you to pull out your camera and snap away, compair and share the results!

Even if photography gets frustrating, please remember:

We try to grab pieces of our lives as they speed past us. Photographs freeze those pieces and help us remember how we were.

SOCCER IN AMERICA IS # ???

Very good article dug up by our staffers!  Just how important is Soccer in America?

The mystery of soccer
 Soccer is not a professional sports Americans care about very much.  It does not rank in the top 20 sports (as pictured) and it actually comes in below equestrian jumping and tractor pulls.

This is a mystery.

After all, soccer has four passionate fan bases in the US:

1) immigrants arrived from soccer mad countries (South America, Africa, Europe, um, like, the whole world)

2) women under the age of 55 (thanks to the triumphs of Mia Hamm and company at the World Cup events in the late 1990s)

3) kids now participating in school and neighborhood programs that have embraced soccer because it is 3.1 inexpensive, 3.2 co-educational (if required), and 3.3 easy to play badly.   Are there a lot of these kids?  I believe there's a reason we call their mothers "soccer moms."

4) kids who have graduated from said programs.  Kids have been passing through these programs in big numbers for at least 20 years.  This means that the first cohort is now in its mid twenties and in possession of the disposal income to support a local club and a national league.

This is what a marketer would call an "installed base."  Millions of people have followed or played the game.  If only 20% become fans, it should be more or less easy to sustain a professional league play.  But this has been really hard to do.  Soccer has struggled.

But things are looking up.

According to an article in BusinessWeek, the money is now in place with investors pouring $1 billion dollars into the league in the last two years.  Red Bull putting down $100 million to buy a New York franchise.  New stadiums are being created.  Ticket sales are up 20% this year with attendance approaching 20,000 a game.

This is good news for fans of dynamism because soccer is a dynamic game in a way that football and baseball are distinctly not.  George Will once said of the former that it combined two of the worst aspects of American life: violence and committee meetings.  Baseball would be improved by either one.  Soccer is all about pattern recognition on the fly.  Says the striker, "if this is true, and this is true, and this is true, then this pass is called for.  No!  He moved."  One of the real pleasures of the game is watching patterns form and reform on the field as these two little universes reconfigure themselves in a spectacular display of "sense and respond" as Steve Haeckel would call it.

But there is room for product development.  Specifically, something has to be done about the physics of the game.  There is too much time and too much space.  A 90 minute game is too long and so is the field.  Both tax players so heavily that dynamism is actually suppressed.  I am not suggesting dramatic reductions.  Otherwise, soccer would become merely basketball played with one's feet.  But I think 60 minutes and a smaller field would bring the game alive nicely.

Will this happen.  Absolutely not.  Soccer fans are religious zealots.  There will be no reformation.  I think this means that while soccer will climb from its present obscurity, it will never be ready for prime-time, and the present marketing opportunity will be wasted.  Too bad.

WINNING!!!

Here is a great article borrowed from the Spokane Youth Soccer site!!!

By Sean Bushéy, Technical Director, Spokane Shadow Youth Soccer Club, August 3, 2008

Every time I come away from a youth soccer game whether I am out recruiting for Whitworth or just watching my kids play, I end up shaking my head…and it doesn’t matter the level. Do you know who cares the most about winning? Parents! Who is next on the list? Coaches….however, the best coaches will always keep losing in perspective. Who is last? You guessed it, players. Ultimately, players just want to play.

Parents just boggle my mind (and remember I am one of “them!”) We get so caught up in the winning and losing thing and it baffles me as to why. Maybe we just want our kids to be happy; maybe we want to associate with a winner; maybe we want to be playing instead; maybe we want the medal. Coaches can certainly fall into a trap with the latter few suggestions—see at a 3v3 tournament in Cheney where a coach (not one of ours ) was kicked out of an 11 year old’s game—yes a 3v3 tournament! Or, just today, a parent held up a championship game for minutes on end as he would not leave after being ejected from a 14 year old’s game! Good grief! As an aside, this was my nephew’s game and he ended up losing on a PK call with less than a minute to go… you know what? After the game a teammate asked him to come over to go swimming—that’s what was now important: being able to spend time with a friend. Oh by the way, the parent that was ejected was from the “winning” team.

Winning is certainly more fun than losing; unfortunately, we just do not get to experience winning all the time. As you can deduce, I just came back from a weekend full of games here in the Valley. Reality is some teams won and some teams lost; even lost big. I spoke to a group of 10 year old boys after they lost “big”. You know what? They all said they had fun…after shaking hands with the opponents they raced over to give all their parents a high five…all with smiles on their faces. I saw this over and over again from players within our club and outside our club…whether they won or they lost. They forgot about the losses—and wins--pretty quickly! It is only us parents and coaches that remember the loss, and this is where it gets messy. Our role in these cases is to NOT remind them about what they did wrong or how bad it was, but we are to keep that sense of joy that comes from playing. Reality is, the players want to play; everybody wants to win…but really, the kids just want to play; let’s keep encouraging them to do so! Parents, that’s your job. Coaches, we are to teach; evaluate the test (the game) and then teach to make them better.

Before you think I’m too soft when it comes to winning, I do want to say that I firmly believe in competing to win and I believe in having winners and losers as you can learn from these situations. Not everybody can get a blue ribbon! Hence, Abraham Lincoln losing many elections before being elected President and Michael Jordan being cut as a 9th grade basketball player. Even in these two brief examples, you can see that it is not about the winning, it is about the effort to win. It is about “getting knocked down and getting back up to try again.” I am a big Vince Lombardi fan…and am firmly behind his famous quote, which is often misquoted: “winning isn’t everything; competing to win is”. Often the last part of the phrase is known as “winning is the only thing”; however, if you read his books, you’ll note it is as I’ve put it. That is his message behind his success.

As coaches, this is our job—teaching them to compete. That is easier said than done—competing. It is much easier to keep to yourself. As such, you should really be proud of your child for taking the risk of competing as there is a greater chance of experiencing failure (Lincoln lost many times) than “success” (as defined by society most often—wins and losses). However, if we can continue to teach them that the willingness to compete is the true measure of success, then they will always be winners in this game of life…and that is what we want for our children, isn’t it?

I very much appreciate the positive energy that I see on most of our sidelines and I know your child appreciates it as well. Keep encouraging them!

"Help!  Is there a Doctor in the house?"

Thigh Contusions: The Dreaded "Knock"

Thigh Contusions also know as Thigh Bruises, Charlie Horses, or Dead Leg occur very often in soccer, either you get kicked in the thigh or another knee may catch you on your thigh. Either way they can be extremely painful and debilitating. The reason they are so painful is because when you obtain a contusion to a muscle many of the blood vessels surrounding the area are damaged, this causes a tremendous amount of bleeding to the area. This bleeding causes increased pressure in your thigh which in turn damages your muscle cells and activates your pain receptors in that area.

Treatment:
Immediate treatment should include the application of an ice bag directly to the skin for 30 minutes. The ice bag should be held in place with a compressive wrap. After Ice application the thigh should be wrapped with a compressive bandage to help reduce further swelling. Ice should be re-applied every 2 hours for 25 minutes.

First Night:
Along with the previously mentioned treatments the athlete should have their foot "hog tied" to their thigh (See Photos Below). - The athlete should sleep like this for the first night try to keep this wrap on for at least the first 24 hours. You may have a cramp in the back of your thigh while you are sleeping, if this occurs take the wrap off for a couple of minutes. Then stretch out your hamstrings, and return the wrap to the initial position.

Start the wrap by going around the calf 2 times, then bend the knee and wrap around
the thigh and calf. Try and bend the knee as much as possible. The sooner this wrap
is applied the more bending will be allowed.

Day 2 - Until 90% of your Range of Motion has been regained:
The next day should include bi-hourly stretching of the quadriceps muscle with 25 minutes of ice following the stretching routine. - Continue this until you have regained 90% of your uninjured legs range of motion. If you are still having trouble stretching you should keep your leg "hog tied" as much as possible. If you choose not to "hog tie"you should keep the compression bandage on your thigh during this period.

If the above cannot be done, then get thee to a physical therapist PRONTO!!!

90% of Range of Motion - Resolution of Injury:
Stretching of the Quadriceps should be performed - Ice application for 25 minutes after stretching - Once the pain has subsided the athlete should start to jog, building up to a run over the next week. Strengthening of the Quadriceps and Hamstrings should begin during this phase. This may include some progressive weight training,, balancing, and some soccer related exercise.

Squat:

While balancing on your injured leg, bend your knee so you can touch a soccer ball.

Hold 1 - 2 seconds and come back up.
Repeat 10 - 15 times,several times daily.

Volley:

While balancing on your injured leg have someone throw a ball to your feet, volley the ball back to them.

Perform this 10 -15 times, then switch legs.

Do this several times a day

Return to Play:
When the athlete is ready to return have them where a foam pad over the area for the next couple of weeks to avoid further injury. If in the next couple of months you notice a hard bump in the area you should consult a physician as you may have developed a calcium nodule in the area known as myositis ossificans. If this injury is not treated properly it may last for several weeks.

Cut a piece of foam about 3/4 inches thick, cut a hole in the center, then tape another piece of foam over the first one. Use a compression bandage to hold in place over injured area.

One aspect of contusions is the development of a hard mass in the thigh with a progressive loss of motion. This is "myositis ossificans" and is a result of the body forming bone deep to the muscle. This occurs in very severe thigh contusions and should be concerning in any young athlete who has severe pain and an inability to obtain full motion of the knee during the first week after injury! An Xray should be obtained at every 2 week intervals if pain is ongoing and motion is poor. The use of Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) should be taken if there are no sensitivities to the medication as it tends to slow the production of bone formation.
This condition NEEDS attention!!

With all this movement down in the Vancouver area, does it really help the teams or our we just merging into bigger clubs trying to be like the Seattle area?

Although i don't know all the ins and outs of what is going on in vancouver, I have kept in touch with a few people down there. Its more then clubs just trying to be like seattle. The select and rec programs down there have been struggling a bit and thats one of the reasons why VUSA was created. The merging with premier clubs to create bigger clubs seems like a logical step. Rather then competing against each other it helps them create a stronger base and overall club. I honestly think its a good thing and it will help kids find places to play. For example in the past after premier tryouts if a child doesn't make the team they aren't always sure where to go and play. Now the premier coaches can cut a player and know they will get offered spots with the select program they are working with. Plus it helps keep those select kids on the radar of the premier coaches because they are working with those team. If this is what it takes to keep kids playing soccer then I'm for whatever mergers they all decide to do.

"VIEW FROM BEHIND THE WHISTLE"

Quote from: "The Ref"
Myths of the Game and other Nonsense

Quote
Can you please ask the ref to give us an update on the offside rule? if the attacking player is halfway (half a body) closer to the goal then the last defender is that still offside? Or does the attacker have to be even with the last defender?
[/color]

Offside Position:  At the moment a teammate touches the ball, the attacking player is on the attacking half of the field and closer to the goal line than the ball and the second to last defender.

It is NOT an infringement to be in an Offside Position.

From the Interpretation of the Laws of the Game and Guidelines for Referees (on p. 99 of the 2008/2009 Law book):
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
LAW 11 – OFFSIDE
Definitions
In the context of Law 11 — Offside, the following definitions apply:
* “nearer to his opponents’ goal line” means that any part of a player’s head, body or feet is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.  The arms are not included in this definition
http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/lawsofthegame.html
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Offside Infringement only occurs when the above positioned player:
-   Interferes with play or an opponent in the active area of play.
-   Gains an advantage from the position.  Gaining an advantage is strictly defined as receiving the ball off a deflection from an opponent or the goal post/crossbar.

Example:
Except for Red goalkeeper, all players are on White's half of the field.  White goal keeper punt's the ball into Red's defensive half.  At the moment of the punt, a White attacker has one foot on her own half and one foot on the halfway line.  This player is in an Offside Position (don't argue with me – you will lose).

The astute Assistant Referee will not raise the flag for Offside Infringement until he/she determines that the player has interfered with play (touched the ball) or interfered with an opponent (e.g. deliberately got in the way).  The AR may also raise the flag after determining no other player could possibly reach the ball before the offside positioned player.

This also illustrates why nearly ALL offside decisions will appear to be "delayed" flags or calls.  FYI, those are more likely to be the CORRECT decisions and it is how you should recognize that you are watching a good AR.  The flags that go up immediately could be premature and incorrect, particularly with fast, skilled players.

Quote from: "WPS Lurker"

the site you run is so very fuc&ing funny. It is full of parents who are all after one thing; A pat on their back. You feed their egos and expect the rest of the world to jump on the bandwagon. I have been reading but never posting for years. I am not sure where you came from but why do you do what you do? Are you sick in the head? You post like nobodys business and talk everyday about teams and clubs but we don't even know who you are! Are you getting paid, or some kind of "kick back" for what you do? If not, then you are even sicker in the head then I first imagined lol. Instead of feeding parents ego's why don't you write about important matters like- Making soccer affordable to all the youth in washington, or, talk about psychotic parents that live through their children? These topics need to be spoken about! I enjoy reading your site, but mostly just for laughs. My other questions for you are-Are you a male or female? Are you black or white? What club does your kids play for? No reasons for these questions, just would like to know.

LETTER'S TO THE MAN-RUG!

No questions this week, so it is "oldie but goodie" time

Dear Man-Rug:

How often should I wash my turban?

Wash it until the cows come home bub! If you are from Toronto like all the other 7-11 owners, you would already know that answer. Now go warm up a poptart and get me a slurpee bub! :twisted:

Dear Man-Rug:

How do WE get over our fear of clowns?

That answer is easy bubette! Just go out to the local pub tonight and wear your skanky best. Look for the hairest meanest looking fellow in the joint. Go up to him and offer to make him a "poptart" in the morning. By tomorrow morning you will forget about the clowns and be more apt to making sandwiches like every dame should :twisted:
