Christopher Anderson - Thursday, September 4, 2008
19-year old American striker Preston Zimmermann has parted company with Hamburg SV of the German Bundesliga and signed for newly-promoted Austrian Bundesliga club SV Kapfenberg.
“He will join the first team," press spokesman Christoph Pelzl confirmed with YA. "Whether he plays is of course a decision for [head coach Werner] Gregoritsch.”
With the signing, the current ninth place team in the ten-team league adds its second American forward to the roster, having already signed former Monmouth standout Damon Wilson in the off-season.
After three seasons with the amateur side in Hamburg, Zimmermann is expected to don the number 29 jersey for Gregoritsch's team.
“He arrived on Monday and is already training with the team,” Pelzl added.
Coming off their first win in eight league matches thus far, the Falcons from Kapfenberg, population 22,000, are hovering above the cellar and hope to find some much-needed firepower in Zimmermann to jumpstart their first-ever season in the Austrian Bundesliga.
Their 3-2 victory over American Nate Jaqua's former club SCR Altach last Friday galvanized the Falcons and brought them out of last place.
Zimmermann concludes a two and a half year stint in Hamburg, featuring 45 appearances and nine goals for the Amateurs in the German Regionalliga Nord.
With the break this weekend for international matches, the US Under-23 forward will have a week to prove his mettle to coach Gregoritsch before next weekend's ÖFB Stiegl Cup match against SV Spittal/Drau from Austria's third highest division, the Regionalliga Mitte.
Kapfenburg resume league action on September 21st when they travel to Klagenfurt to face SK Kelag Austria Kaernten.
