On the positive side - 2 Reign players came to a charity event to help raise money for lower income players (OLE) I attended this past weekend. They were both wonderful ladies with very inspiring stories and the club made every effort to get involved in the event. AFA community outreach goes, they are well ahead of the game.

WPS - CrazyParents U11-UCrazy -PG13- / Supplemental or 3rd tryouts
« on: May 16, 2013, 11:49:47 AM »

I don't think I've ever seen as many supplemental or 3rd tryouts being advertised as this year.

Altruistic (We really want to make sure as many kids can play this level as possible) or materialistic (someone loses a paid job if we don't form our 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th team at this level)?

Honestly..it's the rare case where a team that comes out of tryouts light on players manages to have an enjoyable season.

Discuss....

From the WiAA point of view there's lots of reasons why it's prohibited. Recruiting, freezing out players not on the club team, conflict between private ($$$) and HS coaching.

It does have many unfortunate implications on getting qualified HS coaches involved in the schools, especially the smaller schools.

The issue I have is how most HS basketball coaches seem to manage to make it a year round sport where they coach the same group in and out of school but the other sports don't seem to get that same opportunity. Is it a freak of the calendar or do they work the rules in a way which soccer coaches can't?

That's why there's a running joke that goes...

What's the best way to make a Crossfire A team? Make the A team of another club and wait to be recruited.

6
You are holding GU16,17,18 tryouts at the same time.    Are you forming separate teams or a mixed team?

Just curious.
We form separate teams at each age. Usually at least 2 per age/gender. Right now we have 2 teams at GU15, GU16 and GU17. Players do have the option to try and play up.

It's an incredibly wide field. Teams that play an outside in game will have a tough time getting the ball from a wide position to one that threatens the goal. Teams that play a more direct style with speed to burn up front will have lots of opportunities to play the ball over the top. The midfield will have lots of time to settle and get their heads up to look forward. Most of the corner kicks will be dropping at the front post.

It's a field that favors fit, deep rosters that frequently sub the midfield.

looks like semi finals are on field 11 looks like it is behind mod fiels and turf.  Is that Sounders reserve practice field?

It's the worlds largest turf field behind the mod fields. The sounders reserve field is the one next to it. Field 11 drastically favors teams that are fit and like open space, there's acres of space on it.

I've been to parent info nights at both EFC and ISC and was turned off by the put downs of the other team. EFC kept saying that they are the best and the only premier offering for EYSA and Gunners said that they have just as good of a program if not better than EFC. I think both clubs would be better off to not compare themselves to others but to concentrate on sending a message of what they can offer the soccer community.

And that's the real tragedy here. Two clubs that would rather slag each other in public as part of their recruiting process for new members than expand on what they can offer.

11

And how do these rec players benefit from EYSA's restrictions whose purpose is to drive players to EFC "A", again? Your argument seems to have a few holes. Please fill them in for me. I am lazy - as you've noted.
C'mon TP do you really think EYSA's sole purpose is to drive players to EFC "A".  What happened to just exploration, recreation, exercise, and the love of the game?
This association exists due to accidents of history and geography, not because members have any significant common interests. In practice, the conflicts revolve over EFC feeling they "deserve" the top 10 and ISC not agreeing. What makes it even more absurd is that within the past two weeks I have seen Issaquah players lead "A" teams from Northwest Nationals, and just about every Crossfire team has players from EYSA. All of the administrative nonsense leads to a mindset where players are mere chattel. Fortunately that disappears as you get closer to the field - many coaches display admirable human qualities.

Players flow to the situation that fits them the best. No arbitrary association or club boundaries are going to change that. They flow to Crossfire because it offers the academy and ECNL, They flow to NWN and the other premier clubs for specific coaches and playing time. What can ISC offer the top 10 players today besides a lot of barking on how Eastside premier is "stealing their players"? The board of ISC has been swinging that hammer for 5+ years and it's still driving the same nail. That hammer is also driving almost all of their higher level volunteer coaches away.

The way the ISC text reads (from the OP), it reads like ISC is a hairsbreadth away from removing it's self from EYSA.  The author of the ISC text does not seem to acknowledge the ties ISC has with EYSA.  Being a member of ISC, one is also linked to EYSA by the nature of how the soccer structure is setup within Washington Youth Soccer (WYS>District>Association>Club).  Requesting that communication be limited between EYSA and the ISC membership makes me suspicious that ISC wishes to impose a exclusive governance over their membership.

But did EYSA coordinate the release of their communication to all clubs?  It seems that it would be beneficial to both EFC and ISC that a joint FAQ be released.  The FAQ could /should inform readers of the difference between things such as US Youth Soccer and US Club Soccer and how each program is connected, or the difference between Region IV vs Puget Sound region, something that most parents (bill payers) might not understand.

I wonder why ISC doesn't follow the Xfire model of having their Rec and Select programs under one umbrella and operating their Premier programs seperately.  That way the Rec and Select programs can continue their operation with their counterparts in EYSA (Keeping the Rec games limited to travel to Lake Hills and Mercer Island, etc is reasonable, travelling to North Seattle is not).  The Premier program can then address the issues separately with WYS and EYSA and not be a distraction to the majority of their membership.

Because there is no model like that. LWYSA is the association.  Crossfire Premier, Crossfire Select and 5 rec clubs all operate under the LWYSA umbrella. The only thing that operates outside the umbrella is the Crossfire Academy and ECNL teams. Even that model is coming under scrutiny.

Eventually I hope that this model does exist where the Premier clubs operate on their own, outside the associations and take their employees and complicated budgetary matters with them. The associations can rent field space, services and office space to the Premier club on an as needed basis.

There's no limit to the number of teams that can sign up for the Challenge Cup. TUC didn't deny anybody a spot.

16
I was under the impression that any team can play RCL as long as the local RCL DOC gave them the go ahead. In this case it would be WPFC or Harbor. After getting that permission & winning D3 last Fall, they would earn promotion. Is that not correct?

Nope. In the spirit of seamless soccer, the SOC has said that teams not belonging to RCL clubs will not get promoted beyond RCL 3.

Clubs cover all their costs when hosting a home game. Not a penny of the entry fee goes back to the clubs to cover costs.

You get a mediocre field and the privilege of paying for parking - all for only $650.

That sounds like a big old pile of sour grapes, Metz. Do the rest of the teams that don't make it out of pool play complain about the $650 tournament entry fee? And it's not WYS that charges for parking, it's Starfire. WYS doesn't own Starfire.

Agreed. Did you ask the players what they think? After all, they're the most important part. I'll be they're pretty happy to be playing. Take a step back and enjoy the ride.

Every team should be complaining about the $650 entry fee. Let's see what you get for $650. A game schedule. 4 teams get field space and refs for 2 semi final games and 2 teams get field space and refs for a final. The rest of the cost is born by the teams in the tournament.

Now compare this with your typical summer tourney where each team gets a game schedule with 3 to 4 games, field space, and refs, facilities, active administration for every game with all costs born by the group putting on the tournament.

There's no denying that the state cups are pure profit for WYS.

My 94 DD is in fantastic physical condition, has never been pregnant, and does not do drugs.  Though not a 4.0, she is well above average scholastically.  She is well adjusted mentally and socially with plenty of friends that share similar traits, regardless of race or economic status.  Is this solely because she plays soccer competitively?  Of course not... but read up on the studies and statistics on obesity, pregnancy, drug use, academics, and social acuity.  They are amazing comparing girls that play competitive sports and those that don't... eye opening... really.

She also happens to be going to a well respected university in Cambridge, MA for the cost of sending her to a WWU or CWU.  Full ride?... of course not.  Those are extremely rare, but you would be amazed at the money non-athletic scholorship schools have for athletes with good (not great) grades.   Would she have gotten, or even been aware of, such a well rounding experience without soccer?  Nope

Do my daughter and I share a passion for something together hat has resulted end endless hours of quality time spent together? Yep

OK, it doesn't HAVE to be soccer, it can be any truly competitive sport, but soccer is definitely worth the time and money for this family.  We have a 97 and see the same benefits for her so will keep paying and standing in the rain... just may weigh in on the 97 challenge thread later!

My 93 DD is in good physical condition, has never been pregnant, and does not do drugs.  She's close to a 4.0 in college.  She is well adjusted mentally and socially with plenty of friends that share similar traits, regardless of race or economic status. She played rec soccer through U18.

She also happens to be going to a well respected university in Southern CA for the cost of sending her to a WWU or CWU.  Full ride?... of course not.  Those are extremely rare, but you would be amazed at the money non-athletic scholorship schools have for students with great grades.   Would she have gotten, or even been aware of, such a well rounding experience if she played competitive soccer?  who knows? I do know academics are the path to more scholarship money than athletics.

Do my daughter and I share a passion for something together hat has resulted end endless hours of quality time spent together? Yes, movies, writing, animation, the seahawks, among others.

OK, it doesn't HAVE to be soccer, it can be anything. The key is to be active in your kids lives without trying to control them. Find some common interests and make sure they keep their grades up.

There are many paths to success. For some it is competitive sports, for many others it is an alternative interest.

no, there is no agreement between xfire select or premier on, well, pretty much anything. Two different clubs, 2 different boards, 2 different philosophies.

Seemless soccer only applies (or is forced to apply) if you want to play as a Select club in the RCL. Then you have to sign the little piece of paper that says - "I am a select club, I only play 9 months a year. Please let me into your league. I understand that all my good players should leave this team and join an ex halted Premier team because we will never get promoted above RCL 3 no matter how good we are."

Seemless soccer can't be used as a way to deny entry into any of the state cups. The only rule is that a team plays in a WYS sanctioned league that year. Your team can play in 10 different leagues and 100 games a year as long as one of them is a WYS league.

AFA why G97 Challenge Cup 2 has such disproportionate groups this year - I think somebody was pissed at many RCL clubs for not only dropping out of Championship Cup but then begging to play in Challenge 2 so they decided to lump them into groups in Challenge 2 and said - "Go ahead  - Eat your own. There can be only 1."

Yes we did switch districts that has been a mess our former district and state officials are probably going to force us back to the old district. In a nut shell we are still trying to be controlled like they own us. Yes - we went a little crazy this year I almost forgot about Super Cup also. If we knew how things were going to play out we wouldn't have played in a state league and just played PSPL. I am sure our team atleast is done with the state and guessing the club will be going the same route soon. That team you mentioned in our current district so called A team is horrible and we spanked them pretty badly this summer. :)  I will say our girls are pretty battle tested at this point we have played some great teams, good teams and not so good this year. We have been fortunate to play ECNL team along with teams from Canada, California, Oregon, Idaho and Hawaii! I must admit the Hawaii trip this past summer was a blast! Who would believe after 56 games a trip to Hawaii plus uniform included our team fees for the year is $900.00. Obviously that does not include hotel, gas, food, sweatshirts but our sponsor paid for the whole Hawaii trip parents just had to give their kids spending money. Like your team I wouldn't trade the family run team for anything. Hopefully your team will come back to the dark side and join us again!  ;D

RCL teams can't block entry of any team into Championship Cup (or challenge cup). They can only block entry into the RCL league. If you wanted to play championship cup, you could have. You can't blame the state for that one.

23
Your numbers are way off..

100% of the paid staff at WYS are focused on Premier, 90% of that 100% are focused on the elite of the elite (academy and ECNL). The remaining 10% are focused on how to extract more money from everyone to fund the staff at WYS.

There's not a paid member of the WYS staff that spends a second working with Select or Rec or even the bottom 90% of the Premier players.

24
I have yet to see a person go through a license class and come out a worse coach than when they entered. However, I have met a lot of coaches that poo-poo the licensing process, yet demonstrate that there is a lot about of the game of soccer they still have to learn.

The day you stop trying to improve yourself is the day the world passes you by.

A license may not make someone a good coach but it shows that they care enough to try and get better.

They need someone to partner with Bradley in the center of the field. He's improved immensely, can possess the ball and calm down the vertical attack but he needs someone else that he can pair with to provide better service to the other players.

I don't fault Klinsman's tactics for this game. It was clear what the game plan was, they executed it very well. The provided little space in the center of the field for mexico, kept the game in front of them for 90 minutes and forced mexico to do what it does poorly (attack from width).

The only fault I can find is that without Donovan the USA doesn't know how to attack on the break. They played for the 0-0 tie and got it. There was no way they were going to get that counter goal to steal a victory because they can't counter.

And Edu was doubly lucky, cause he let Chicarito walk right by him multiple times on corners.

Had a coach who does full time kiddie premier soccer reject 15 separate dates across two months for a make-up match.  Many do not live in reality, we fund the absurdity.

I'm more than willing to accommodate reschedules when a significant portion of a team has conflicts (spring break, basketball tourney, regional track meet) but less likely to reschedule when it's a conflict just for the coach. I don't think I've ever asked a team to reschedule for a coaching conflict. It's not the away team's responsibility if a coach has too many teams or too much going on in their life. That's why you have assistant coaches and parents with video cameras.  ;D

I've seen (and I agree with the call) of impedance when a player radically slows down in an attempt to screen an offensive player without being in playing distance of the ball. To me, that's the same call as when an offensive player with the ball attempts to flick and go around the defender only to have the defender step in front and effectively set a pick, preventing them from getting to the ball. Sure, the defender occupied their space before the offensive player got there but they are making no attempt to play the ball and it's quite clear that their intent is to impede another player.

Sometimes it's very easy to understand the intent of players on the field and make the right call. Impeding without being in playing distance of the ball is usually pretty transparent and it should be called before it becomes a safety issue. Usually about the 3rd time a player tries this tactic the result is a 2 handed shove in the back, a kick in the ankles or a barge from behind to discourage it from continuing. The ref can either let the game police itself or step in before such actions are taken. It all depends on how much physical contact is he/she is encouraging.

Metz --

Agree. Isn't this getting old?

How about we lock Roth, Hanauer, Henderson and Sigi in a room and they fight until it is decided what type of soccer they want to sell to Seattle.  If Sigi wins, the other three stop dabbling in player acquisitions and let Sigi play the style he is know for which is what we say the other night. If Sigi loses, get rid of him and get a coach that has demonstrated the capacity to deliver what the other guys seem to want ... but they do not coach the team.

Get on with it.

Absolutely...

29
Anybody want to discuss this game -- arghhhh.  What a terrible way to play the game.  Get a quick counterattack goal and then sit back on your heals and hope it stands up while Portland passes all over you.  Sounders break down in their defensive third as they can't clear the ball and get a great goal against in the 90th minute.  Bummer deal.  New player had some skills and definately had them on display in the few minutes he was on the field.  Eddie wasn't ready for his cross.  I thought Rose had a tough game and lost possession continuously.  I love Ozzie and his hustle -- Martinez and his dives can go play for somebody else as far as I am concerned.  Zakuani had a few good runs.  Anyway, saw Birch and Patrick Ianni after the game and supposedly, Sigi was stating it is early, we will come together and move on.....blah blah blah.  Disappointing to only get a point at home in the rivalry game.

Portland played the game correctly. They were the better team on the night and the Sounders didn't even deserve the point. Timbers played a controlled game, worked it well through the back 4, easily broke through the forward pressure to get the ball to central midfielders who had plenty of time to control the ball and then attack the Sounders defense. As soon as they went to 3 high pressure players up front, the Sounders were incapable of attacking their defense.

In general Sigi's halftime speach said it all - he wanted the Sounders to play behind the Portland defense. To this bunch that means launching long balls over the top from every spot on the field, making it really easy for the Timbers to cut everything off and keep possession. If that's the game Sigi wants to play he should have gone after Peter Crouch instead of Martins and set the way back machine for 1970's English soccer and I'll go root for another team.

The Sounders lack the technical skill as a team to break any sort of high pressure and also lack a singular player that can hold and control the game and do something other than either pass the ball to the other team or send it 40 yards down the field.

I've lost count of the number of times when a ref thought he/she was doing me and my players a favor by not issuing a caution. The exact opposite is true. Players (especially girls) take yellow cards seriously. They understand they did something wrong when issued a caution. Not so much if whistled for a foul and even less so when the ref decides to talk to them.

There's a reason why refs have a yellow card and a red card. Don't be afraid to pull the yellow out early and often. They are the best way to set the initial tone of the game and a great teaching tool for youth players.
