My 94 DD is in fantastic physical condition, has never been pregnant, and does not do drugs. Though not a 4.0, she is well above average scholastically. She is well adjusted mentally and socially with plenty of friends that share similar traits, regardless of race or economic status. Is this solely because she plays soccer competitively? Of course not... but read up on the studies and statistics on obesity, pregnancy, drug use, academics, and social acuity. They are amazing comparing girls that play competitive sports and those that don't... eye opening... really.
She also happens to be going to a well respected university in Cambridge, MA for the cost of sending her to a WWU or CWU. Full ride?... of course not. Those are extremely rare, but you would be amazed at the money non-athletic scholorship schools have for athletes with good (not great) grades. Would she have gotten, or even been aware of, such a well rounding experience without soccer? Nope
Do my daughter and I share a passion for something together hat has resulted end endless hours of quality time spent together? Yep
OK, it doesn't HAVE to be soccer, it can be any truly competitive sport, but soccer is definitely worth the time and money for this family. We have a 97 and see the same benefits for her so will keep paying and standing in the rain... just may weigh in on the 97 challenge thread later!
My 93 DD is in good physical condition, has never been pregnant, and does not do drugs. She's close to a 4.0 in college. She is well adjusted mentally and socially with plenty of friends that share similar traits, regardless of race or economic status. She played rec soccer through U18.
She also happens to be going to a well respected university in Southern CA for the cost of sending her to a WWU or CWU. Full ride?... of course not. Those are extremely rare, but you would be amazed at the money non-athletic scholorship schools have for students with great grades. Would she have gotten, or even been aware of, such a well rounding experience if she played competitive soccer? who knows? I do know academics are the path to more scholarship money than athletics.
Do my daughter and I share a passion for something together hat has resulted end endless hours of quality time spent together? Yes, movies, writing, animation, the seahawks, among others.
OK, it doesn't HAVE to be soccer, it can be anything. The key is to be active in your kids lives without trying to control them. Find some common interests and make sure they keep their grades up.
There are many paths to success. For some it is competitive sports, for many others it is an alternative interest.
