Around the world, soccer is played by the rich and poor alike. It's a cheap sport - no pads, no special equipment, you just need a ball. But in the United States, soccer has become the domain of the white suburban well-to-do. Just registering for a club team can run about $1,500 per year.

Fact: The sport that American adults play the most is golf, by a wide margin.

Golf is a sport now?  More of a 'pastime.'  The democratization of language and definitions ...

Not a sport. The most popular sport. Popular with the despised suburban well-to-do in fact. Moral of the story: if you want to understand something, (to be fair no one would ever accuse sounderfan "reporting" as having a goal of furthering understanding) you're better off looking at facts than listening to the whining of someone just because they happen to be an immigrant.
